REVIEWING THE LAKE SUPERIOR STATE SERIES
Bowling Green swept Lake Superior State last weekend, winning by identical 4-1 scores. With the victories, BG pulled ahead of LSSU into the 10th playoff spot in the CCHA with 14 points to Lake Superior's 12.
Senior Ryan Murphy scored twice and added an assist to pace BG in Friday night's triumph. All of the Falcon offense came in the second period, with three of their four scores on the power play.
After a scoreless first period, Murphy got the home team on the board with a goal at the 2:02 mark of the second. Greg Day and Scott Hewson drew assists on the even-strength goal. Both Day and Hewson joined Murphy with three points in the game.
The Falcons then would score three straight power-play goals, with the first two coming just 16 seconds apart. The Lakers picked up a pair of penalties at the 12:37 mark of the middle period, and Curtis Valentine scored his seventh goal of the year just over a minute later. Austin de Luis and D'Arcy McConvey assisted on the 5-on-3 goal.
Just 14 seconds after Valentine's tally, Hewson lit the lamp for the fifth time this year. Linemates Murphy and Day drew assists at the 13:54 mark.
Those same three players increased the lead with 1:13 left in the period. Murphy scored his second goal of the night and his 16th of the year, with Day and Hewson assisting.
The Lakers' only goal came off the stick of Yevgeniy Dubravin at 9:54 of the third period. The goal, his eighth of the year, was assisted by Jason Nightingale and Ryan Vince.
BG's Tyler Masters made 30 saves in the victory. Jayme Platt played the first two periods for the Lakers, making 18 stops. Scott Murray played the final 20 minutes in relief of Platt, stopping all eight shots he faced.
Lake Superior was scoreless in seven power-play opportunities, while Bowling Green scored three goals in their eight chances.
Saturday night it was Murphy again pacing the Falcons, this time with his first career hat trick, to help the BG wrap up the weekend sweep.
The Falcons hit the scoreboard right off the bat, with Murphy netting his first goal of the night just 20 seconds into the contest. Greg Day and Doug Schueller were awarded assists on Murphy's 17th of the year.
Freshman D'Arcy McConvey scored what would prove to be the game winning goal at 9:55 of the first. Day and Marc Barlow helped set up McConvey's fourth power-play tally of the season.
With each team a skater down, Murphy hit the back of the net for his second of the match to put the Falcons up 3-0. The unassisted goal was Murphy's 18th of the campaign.
Bart Redden put the Lakers on the scoreboard at 9:41 of the middle frame when he flipped the puck past Falcon goalie Tyler Masters. Redden's second of the season was unassisted.
Ryan Murphy completed the hat trick with an unassisted, empty-net goal at 19:22 of the third. Murphy's team leading 19th goal of the season is a career best.
Tyler Masters stopped 33 of the 34 shots he faced, earning the victory for the Falcons. His record currently stands at 10-12-3. Laker goalie Scott Murray made 29 saves on 33 BG shots.
The Falcons stopped all six Laker power-plays, while going one for six with the man-advantage.
