Matela Named MAC East Division Player of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio - Bowling Green's Len Matela (East) and Central Michigan's David Webber (West) were selected as winners of the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week award for the 12th week of the 2000-01 season.
MAC East Division Player of the Week
Bowling Green's Len Matela (6-9, Jr., C, Merrillville, Ind.) Matela led the Falcons to back-to-back wins for the first time this year with wins over Western Michigan (77-71) and Miami (67-63 in overtime). He averaged 17 points and nine rebounds a game while shooting 68.8% (11-of-16) from the field and 85.7% (12-of-14) from the line. At Miami he hit two free throws with eight seconds left to send the game into OT. He also tied the game in OT at 63-63 with a basket and free throw with 2:13 left, and helped gain a key rebound in OT with 16 seconds left to secure the win.
MAC West Division Player of the Week
Central Michigan's David Webber (6-2, Jr., G, Farmington Hills, Mich.) Led CMU to wins over Akron (78-75) and Northern Illinois (81-74 in overtime) this week, extending the team's winning streak to eight. Webber averaged 26.5 points and 7.0 rebounds. Against Akron, Webber posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Versus NIU, he scored a season-high 34 points, including 22 in the second half of CMU's comeback. He hit five three-pointers against NIU and was 13- of-17 from the line. Webber played all but a few seconds of both games, coming out for a few seconds in the OT period. Webber added 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
West Division Player of the Week nominations Ball State's Patrick Jackson averaged 18 points and five assists as the Cardinals won over Kent State (76-71) and Eastern Michigan (75-69).
Eastern Michigan's Melvin Hicks averaged 19.5 points in losses to Miami and Ball State. Hicks's six three-point goals tied a Worthen Arena record for an opponent. Northern Illinois' Stephen Jones scored 20 points and 10 rebounds and added four steals in an 81-74 overtime loss to Central Michigan.
Toledo's Greg Stempin averaged 20.7 points and 9.7 rebounds as the Rockets went 1-2, losing to Marshall and Kent State while beating Ohio.
East Division Player of the Week nominations
Buffalo's Robert Brown averaged 14 points and 8.5 rebounds as the Bulls lost to Northwestern and Akron.
Kent State's Andrew Mitchell averaged 24.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in a 76-71 loss at Ball State and a 68-54 win at Toledo.
Marshall's J.R. VanHoose averaged 17.5 points and 11.0 rebounds as the Herd beat Toledo and lost to Ohio.
Ohio's Brandon Hunter tallied a pair double-doubles as Ohio lost at Toledo and won at home against Marshall. Hunter averaged 15.5 points and 13.0 rebounds a game.
