THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, looking to snap a five-game losing streak, will remain home for a midweek contest. The Falcons (8-12 overall, 4-5 MAC) meet Ohio University (8-13, 5-5 MAC) in a Wednesday (Feb. 7) contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at venerable Anderson Arena (5,000).
Following the OU game, the Falcons will hit the road for a Saturday (Feb. 10) game against the University of Akron. That contest is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at UA's James A. Rhodes Arena (5,942).
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 32-43. She has a 21-20 ledger in MAC play. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 214-162 (.569). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a record of 8-12 on the season, and the Falcons are 4-5 in MAC play. After opening league action with four consecutive wins, the Falcons have lost the last five contests.
BGSU's latest setback came at the hands of defending league champion Kent State, 80-64, Saturday (Feb. 3). Senior Angie Farmer led the Falcons with 16 points in that game, which was aired on Fox Sports Net Ohio.
If the regular season were to end today, the Falcons would be tied with Miami for eighth place, and would face the RedHawks in the opening round of the MAC Tournament.
Individually, junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 12.7 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, has hit double digits in scoring in 10 of her 14 games this year, including each of the last three.
Farmer is second on the team with 9.8 points per outing, while sophomore Kim Griech is third with 9.0 points per game. Junior Dana Western and senior Afra Smith are fourth and fifth on the team, respectively, with 8.3 and 8.2 points per contest.
True freshman Lindsay Austin is averaging 6.5 points, while redshirt frosh Pam Brown and senior Jackie Adlington each have 5.8 markers.
The Falcons are 4-4 at Anderson Arena, 2-8 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site contests this year. In MAC play, BGSU is 3-2 at home and 1-3 on the road.
From long distance, several Falcons have posted impressive shooting percentages. Farmer is shooting .438 from behind the arc, having made 28 of her 64 three-point field-goal attempts. BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING OHIO: Ohio enters Anderson Arena with an overall record of 8-13, and the Bobcats have a MAC record of 5-5 ... Ohio has won five of the last seven games after an 0-3 conference start ... last week, the 'Cats posted a 68-58 win at Marshall in Wednesday (Jan. 31) action before downing visiting Akron Saturday (Feb. 3), 65-60 ... OU is 3-6 on the road this year, including a 2-3 mark in MAC road action ... individually, junior forward Lori Moorman leads the team in scoring and rebounding, with 15.9 points and 5.8 boards per game ... junior guard Cathy Szall averages 12.8 points per game, while senior guard Ronita Whitfield has 11.3 points per contest ... senior guard Heather Laughlin has 9.7 points and leads the team in both assists (2.2) and steals (2.8) ... sophomore forward Beckie Fischer (7.7 ppg) and freshman guard Andrea Gay (4.2 ppg, 2.2 apg) join Moorman, Szall and Laughlin in the probable starting five ... head coach Lynn Bria has a 19-30 record in her second year in Athens ... she has an overall mark of 95-120 in her eighth year as a head coach.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG trails Buffalo, 3-2), and BGSU holds a 33-16 advantage over Ohio ... the Falcons hold a 20-4 margin in home games vs. the Bobcats ... BGSU has won the last five games in the overall series, including an 82-72 victory in Athens a month ago (Jan. 6, 2001) ... the Falcons have taken the last six games at Anderson Arena from the Bobcats ... Ohio's last series win, a 96-79 decision, came in Athens on Feb. 21, 1998.
LAST TIME OUT: Julie Studer scored 25 points to lead Kent State to an 80-64 victory over the Falcons Saturday afternoon (Feb. 3) ... senior Angie Farmer led the Falcons with 16 points, while freshman Lindsay Austin tied her season best with 15 points, and junior Francine Miller added 11 ... BGSU has lost five consecutive MAC games for the first time in school history ... Carrie Nance joined Studer in double digits for the Golden Flashes, scoring 17 points on the afternoon ... the Falcons forced KSU into 17 turnovers in the first half, but BG committed 15 miscues and shot just .250 (7-of-28) in the opening 20 minutes ... as a result, the Flashes led by a 29-16 count at the break ... in the second half, the Falcons rallied to within seven, at the 15:53 mark, as Austin hit a free throw to make the score 35-28 ... but, after a timeout, KSU's Nance converted a conventional three-point play, starting a back-breaking 12-0 run over the next three minutes ... when the smoke had cleared, the Flashes led by 19 points ... KSU upped the margin to as many as 28 points, shooting .607 in the second half en route to a .509 field-goal percentage for the game, and holding BG to a .379 success rate on the afternoon ... KSU went 23-of-29 from the foul line to the Falcons' 8-of-11 ... senior Jackie Adlington scored nine points and led BG in rebounding for the sixth consecutive game, with eight ... KSU held a 40-32 advantage on the boards.
LOOKING TO SNAP THE STREAK: The Falcons have lost five consecutive MAC games for the first time in school history ... BGSU went over 20 years and 325 games in MAC competition before losing five in a row.
ADLINGTON ADDS A LOT: Over the past few games, senior Jackie Adlington has asserted herself as a force to be reckoned with ... she suited up for the Central Michigan game (Jan. 9), marking the first time since the season opener that she was in uniform ... Adlington had not played since breaking her foot vs. Youngstown State (Nov. 18) ... she played just one minute against Central, but has averaged 7.7 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds in the last six games ... she set a BGSU best with seven rebounds vs. Toledo, then matched that total at KSU ... Adlington had eight points in the game at NIU, adding six boards ... then, vs. Buffalo, she set BG highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds, posting the first double-double of her brief Falcon tenure ... Adlington had 10 points and seven boards at WMU, and had nine points and eight rebounds in the KSU rematch ... Adlington has led the Falcons in rebounding in each of the last six games ... she has recorded her impressive totals in an average of just 20.2 minutes per game over those six contests.
ANDER-RIFFIC! Believe it or not, the Falcons' total of six three-pointers made against Kent State Saturday (Feb. 3) is the team's lowest total in a MAC home game in two years ... in eight home conference games last season, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-point field goals per contest ... BGSU shot an eye-popping .461 from three-point range in those games ... this year, the Falcons have made 12 treys vs. Akron (Jan. 3), nine against CMU (Jan. 9), eight vs. Toledo (Jan. 13), seven vs. UB and six vs. KSU ... adding in the MAC Tournament first-round game vs. Ohio last February, BGSU is averaging 10.3 treys and shooting .426 (144-of-338) over the last 14 home games vs. MAC teams ... the Falcons have made at least six triples in every one of those games.
THREE BALL, CORNER POCKET: In Mid-American Conference play last season, the Falcons averaged almost 10 three-point field goals made per game, with 159 successful triples in 16 games ... the Brown and Orange sank a season-high 12 against Akron, and added 10 at Ohio, nine vs. CMU and eight vs. both Toledo and NIU ... BG has made a total of 229 successful triples in the last 25 MAC regular-season contests (9.16 per game).
WHO'S STARTING NOW? Last year, only seven different players started at least one game ... this year, a total of 11 different players have made at least one start ... no player has started all 20 games, and only two players (senior Afra Smith and freshman Lindsay Austin) have started 19 contests ... coach Dee Knoblauch has utilized 10 different starting lineups this season, including six different lineups in the last six games ... she used only three different combinations during all of last season, and used the same lineup for the last 19 games of 1999-2000.
FALCONS IN NCAA RANKINGS: The Falcons were listed in several team and individual categories when the NCAA released the latest national statistics ... as a team, BGSU was tied for seventh in the nation in three-point field goals per game, with an average of 7.28 ... the Falcons were 14th in the country in three-point field-goal percentage, at .392, through games of Jan. 29 ... individually, sophomore Kim Griech was 26th in the country with a three-point field-goal pct. of .410 ... after the WMU and KSU games, the Falcons are now shooting treys at a .379 rate and making 7.26 per game, while Griech's long-range rate is .411.
MAKE 'EM COUGH IT UP: Kent State's total of 25 turnovers Saturday (Feb. 3) marked the most for a Falcon opponent this season ... BG had not forced that many opponent miscues since Ohio had 27 turnovers last Feb. 15.
NEED TO GET TO THE LINE: The Falcons have been on the short end of the free-throw statistics over the last few games ... in the last two contests, BGSU attempted just 13 free throws, while the opponents shot a total of 60 ... the Falcons are averaging 13.6 charity tosses in MAC games, to the foes' 26.6.
WORKING OVERTIME: The Falcons' overtime loss to Buffalo (Jan. 27) was BGSU's first OT game in nearly two years, since a 98-93 home triumph over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 20, 1999 ... in that game, as in the UB game, Francine Miller hit a three-pointer in the dying seconds of regulation to force the extra session ... the loss to Buffalo broke a five-game BG winning streak in overtime games ... the Falcons had not lost an OT contest since an 82-77 setback at Ohio in the 1996 MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round (March 5, 1996).
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Four different Falcons have posted double-doubles this year ... senior Jackie Adlington became the latest addition to that group, after totalling 14 points and 11 rebounds vs. Buffalo (Jan. 27) ... the double-double was the first of her BGSU career ... junior Francine Miller had 23 points and 11 rebounds in BG's win over Charleston Southern on Nov. 24 ... the double-double was her first of the season and the 11th of her career ... nine of those double-doubles came last year, including four in MAC play and another in the first round of the conference tournament ... redshirt freshman Pam Brown, in just her third game in the Brown and Orange, had the first double-double of her career in that Charleston Southern game, while junior Dana Western had her first-ever double-double vs. Arizona (Dec. 8).
DOUBLE DIGITS: Jackie Adlington, as noted, had 14 points in the Buffalo game (Jan. 27) ... Adlington became the 12th different Falcon player to hit double figures in scoring on at least one occasion this year ... eight different players hit double digits in that category during all of last year.
KAPFERER KONNECTS: Freshman Kelly Kapferer made five of her six shots from the field en route to a season-high 10 points in the win at Ohio (Jan. 6) ... for her efforts, she was rewarded with her first collegiate start vs. CMU ... in that game, Kapferer again scored 10 points, going 5-of-8 from the floor ... Kapferer is shooting .515 (17-of-33) over the last eight games, after shooting 12-of-31 (.387) during the first 12 contests of the year.
BENCH PROVIDES A LIFT: Not surprisingly, BGSU's injury woes in December seem to have translated into greater experience and depth in January ... the Falcons have gotten tremendous production from the bench players in several recent games ... BGSU's bench has outscored the opponents' reserves in seven of the nine MAC games ... some of the impressive margins during that time include 41-14 in the win at Ohio (Jan. 6) and 33-13 vs. Toledo (Jan. 13) ... the Falcons held bench advantages of 35-7 and 34-3, respectively, vs. NIU and Buffalo (Jan. 27) ... in the nine MAC games, BG has gotten 305 points (33.9 per game) from the bench players to the foes' 172 (19.1 avg.).
SMART, VERY SMART: The BGSU women's basketball team has had a great deal of success in the classroom ... as a team, the Falcons have a grade-point average of 3.13 through the fall semester ... eight of the team's 14 players have a cumulative GPA of 3.28 or better, led by sophomore Megan Jerome at a perfect 4.00 through her first three semesters at the University ... senior Angie Farmer has a 3.78 GPA.
SMART, VERY SMART II (OR, "FOUR-POINT GUARDS"): The Falcons' four true freshmen seem to have successfully made the transition to college life ... in addition to receiving regular playing time on the court, all four had a GPA of 3.45 or better during their first semester on campus ... point guards Lindsay Austin and Emily Pohl each had a perfect 4.00 GPA in the fall, while Stefanie Wenzel had a GPA of 3.76 ... Kelly Kapferer had a 3.45 GPA in the fall ... on the hardwood, Austin, Kapferer and Pohl all have played in every game this year, while Wenzel has seen action in 13 contests.
FARMER'S FREE THROWS: Senior Angie Farmer entered the season with a career free-throw percentage of .813, and has done nothing to hurt that stat this year ... this season, she has missed just two free throws in 39 attempts, for a .949 success rate ... she made her first 22 free-throw attempts of the MAC campaign, including sinking all 10 charity tosses in the win over Akron ... Farmer enters the Ohio game with a .963 conversion rate (26-of-27) in league play.
60 ON "D" IS KEY: Not surprisingly, BGSU has been quite successful when limiting the opposition to 60 points or less over the years ... the Falcons held Toledo to 58 points in the Jan. 13 win, the second time BG had kept the opponent under 60 markers this season ... the Falcons have won 21 consecutive games when holding the opposition under 60 points ... since 1991-92, the Brown and Orange is 45-3 when holding foes to 60 points or less.
INJURY REPORT: The Falcons have had their share of injuries, and then some, this season ... the latest addition to the injured list is sophomore guard Megan Jerome ... Jerome missed the KSU game Saturday (Feb. 3), and will miss the remainder of the season, with a stress fracture in her back ... Dee Knoblauch's team actually went through the month of January relatively injury-free after playing five December games without three starters - seniors Jackie Adlington and Angie Farmer and junior Francine Miller ... Miller missed the Jan. 24 game at NIU with a thigh injury, but has played the last three contests.
BLOCK PARTY: By the 12th game of the season, the Falcons had surpassed the blocked-shots total for all of last season ... after posting a total of 39 blocks (1.39 per game) last winter, the Falcons now have blocked 58 shots this season ... BG is averaging 2.90 rejections per contest this season.
BLOCK PARTY II: Junior Dana Western entered the season with a career total of eight blocked shots ... through 20 games this year, she already has a total of 21 rejections to her credit.
76 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... in fact, BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 76 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT: Redshirt freshman Pam Brown hit a three-pointer in the Detroit contest, the Falcons' fifth game of the year ... Brown became the 10th different Falcon to hit a trey this season ... 10 different players hit a "three" last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE TREY: The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through 20 games this season, the Falcons are averaging 7.20 three-pointers made per contest ... Bowling Green has made at least five treys in every game but two this season.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are sinking free throws at a .725 clip ... the Falcons shot .773 (68-of-88) from the free-throw line over the first five MAC games, before stumbling (4-of-11) at NIU ... BG righted the ship, making 9-of-10 vs. Buffalo, and the Falcons are now shooting .738 from the line in conference games this year.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: In the first 12 seasons after the three-point shot was adopted (1986-87 to 1997-98), Bowling Green teams made a total of 666 three-pointers in 1,890 attempts ... over the last two-plus years, BGSU's totals are nearly 81 percent of the totals during those first 12 seasons ... through the KSU game, Knoblauch's teams have made 538 treys in 1,498 tries since she became head coach of her alma mater.
WRITE THOSE RECORDS IN PENCIL: Entering last season, the school record for three-pointers made in a game was 12 ... BGSU hit double digits in that category no fewer than 12 times last year, including a 16-for-38 performance - both school records - in a win over Akron (Jan. 26) ... the Falcons have hit double digits three times in 2000-01, including twice in MAC play to date ... BG made 11 treys vs. Charleston Southern, 12 against Akron and 10 at Ohio.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: It is safe to say that the Falcons will start a freshman at the point-guard spot whenever the team takes the floor ... both of the team's point guards are frosh ... Lindsay Austin started each of the first 17 games, and has started 19 contests overall ... Emily Pohl, the other freshman point guard, made her first collegiate start vs. Buffalo (Jan. 27) ... Austin is averaging 28.5 minutes per game, with Pohl averaging 13.2.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Four current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer is currently in second place on the all-time school list for career three-point percentage (.425, 139-of-327), while junior Francine Miller is third (.397, 96-of-242) ... sophomore Kim Griech is now fifth on that list (.388, 64-of-165), while junior Dana Western is in eighth place (.368, 50-of-136) ... Farmer is second all-time in three-pointers made, while Miller is fourth ... Griech is eighth and Western is tied for ninth on that list ... Farmer is second in three-point attempts, while Miller is now fifth ... Griech is eighth, while Western is 10th.
CAPTAIN'S LOG: BG seniors Angie Farmer and Afra Smith are the team captains for the 2000-2001 season.
