CONWAY, S.C. - Senior Jen Domschot's two-run homer rallied the Bowling Green State University softball team from a 2-1 deficit to a 3-2 victory over East Carolina University Tuesday afternoon (March 13). The game was part of the Coastal Carolina Classic.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-3 on the season, while dropping ECU to 21-7. The Lady Pirates returned seven starters from a team that went 60-17 last year.
ECU got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first off junior Andrea Genter. A walk, a stolen base, a single and a sacrifice fly gave the Lady Pirates the early lead.
The Brown and Orange came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the frame. Senior Angie Domschot led off with a double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on sophomore Kandice Machain's single to center.
After a scoreless second inning, ECU again took the lead in the third. Keisha Shepperson, who scored both of the team's runs, reached base on a one-out single. One out later, she stole second and scored on a single by Angela Manzo. Manzo had both Lady Pirate RBI in the game.
ECU loaded the bases later in that inning, but Genter worked out of the jam without any further damage.
In the bottom of the third, the Domschot twins gave BG the lead. Angie Domschot had a one-out, infield single, and Jen Domschot hit a two-out, two-run homer to right-center field to give the Falcons a 3-2 edge that would hold up for the rest of the game.
The homer was the first of the year for Jen Domschot, who set the school record with six round-trippers a year ago. She now has nine in her career to move into sole possession of second place on the BGSU list.
Neither team would score again, although the Falcons loaded the bases in the fifth. BG's Genter surrendered just one hit over the final four innings en route to a complete-game five hitter. She walked three batters and struck out four in improving her record to 2-0 on the year.
At the plate, Angie Domschot had two of the Falcons' five hits and scored two runs.
The Falcons, now 3-0 in the CCU Classic, return to action with a Tuesday night contest vs. the University of Virginia.
