CONWAY, S.C. - The Bowling Green State University softball team got a solid pitching performance from McKenna Houle Wednesday (March 14), but could not get the bats going. The result was a 1-0 loss to East Carolina University in championship-round action of the Coastal Carolina University Classic.
The Falcons drop to 5-5 on the year, and finish play at the CCU Classic with a 3-2 record. ECU is now 22-7 on the season.
BGSU could advance only two runners as far as second base in the game. In the first inning, after senior Angie Domschot led off with a single, Jen Domschot reached on a fielder's choice as her sister was forced at second. With two outs, Jen Domschot stole second base (the Falcons' first stolen base -- and first SB attempt -- of the year), but could advance no further.
In the fourth inning, sophomore Kandice Machain led off with a single, and was forced at second on a grounder by junior Renee Rosemeier. Rosemeier took second when senior Nikki Rouhana reached base on a Lady Pirate error, but a groundout ended the threat.
ECU's lone run came in the sixth inning, when Addie Chlebnikow drew a leadoff walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a one-out single.
Houle, a sophomore, was saddled with the loss, despite throwing a complete-game five-hitter. She walked two batters and struck out six. She saw her record drop to 1-3 on the season.
Other than the aforementioned hits by Angie Domschot and Machain, the only BG hit came off the bat of sophomore Crystal Wilson. She had a one-out single in the fifth inning.
The Falcons will take a day off from competition before returning to action Friday (March 16) with a pair of games at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The Brown and Orange will face North Carolina A&T in a 4:00 p.m. game before returning to the field for an 8:00 p.m. start against Saint Louis.
