LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team suffered a narrow loss to a nationally-ranked program Thursday (March 15), falling to the University of South Carolina by a 4-3 score. The neutral-site dual match was held in Las Vegas, Nev.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 9-5 in dual play this season, while the Gamecocks improve to 8-4. USC, ranked 39th in the latest ITA national rankings, had posted a 4-3 victory over 22nd-ranked Florida just four days before facing the Brown and Orange.
The Falcons won the doubles point to open the match, taking two of the three flights. The top-flight team of juniors Vitek Wild and Ed Kuresman, paired together for the first time this season, recorded an 8-6 win over USC's Guillaume Legat and David Nelson. BGSU's #3 tandem of sophomore Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo and freshman Nick Moxley won by an 8-3 score.
In singles action, however, the Gamecocks took four of the six matches to claim the dual win. BGSU's victories came from Moxley at the fourth flight and sophomore Micael Lopez-Acevedo at the sixth. Each player won a three-set match, including a tiebreaker in the final set.
The Falcons' other singles competitors included Wild at the top flight, sophomore Geoff Hiscox at the second level, Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo at flight #3 and sophomore Peter Gardonyi at the fifth flight. Hiscox suffered his loss to Legat, who is ranked 80th in the nation by the ITA.
The Falcons will conclude spring-trip action with a pair of matches in San Diego, Calif., on Friday (March 16). BGSU will face UC Riverside as well as #62 San Diego State.
