Bowling Green, Ohio - The Falcon hockey team kept their playoff hopes alive, defeating the Ferris State Bulldogs by a 1-0 margin. BG can secure a postseason berth with a win tomorrow night.
BG and FSU battled through 60 minutes of regulation deadlocked at zero. Each team created quality scoring opportunities, but netminders Tyler Masters and Phil Osaer were up to the challenge, stopping 21 and 24 shots respectively.
Bowling Green would win their first OT contest this year with a goal from Austin de Luis. Ryan Wetterberg started the play, breaking into the FSU zone and ringing a bullet off the post. The rebound came out to Doug Schueller, who then passed it ahead to de Luis. The junior left winger was able to slam the puck home past Osaer at 2:57 of the extra period.
By posting the shutout, Tyler Masters broke two BG records. Masters became the career leader in shutouts with five, breaking the record of four shared by Terry Miskolczi (1970-73), Mike Liut (1973-33), and Al Sarachman (1973-77). In blanking three teams this season (Princeton 5-0, Rensselaer 4-0, Ferris State 1-0), Masters bested the previous mark of two in a year. Seven goalies had posted two shutouts in a season, with the most recent occurrence at the hands of Masters in his rookie campaign.
Bowling Green was scoreless in eight power play opportunities, while Ferris State went 0-4 with the man-advantage. BG's record currently stands at 12-18-5 (7-15-5 CCHA) and FSU is 13-17-5 (9-14-5 CCHA). The Falcons and the Bulldogs finish their series and the regular season Saturday night at the BGSU Ice Arena, with faceoff scheduled for 7:05 p.m. BGSU will celebrate senior night, as the six graduating players skate in their final home game.
