The Falcons (11-18 [6-10 MAC]), the tournament's ninth seed, loss to the top-seeded University of Toledo, the eventual tournament champion, at Cleveland's Gund Arena.
BGSU'S MAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Falcons participated in the MAC Tournament for the 17th time in its 19-year history ... BG has posted a 21-11 record since the MAC Tournament was instituted in 1982 ... the Falcons' complete game-by-game tournament history can be found on page 2 ... BGSU's win total ranks the Falcons second among league teams, and the .656 winning pct. is also the second-best of any school ... the Brown and Orange's total of six tournament titles places the team second among league schools ... BGSU played in the tourney for the 15th-straight year, the longest current streak among MAC schools.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU finished the 2000-01 season with a record of 11-18, and the Falcons completed MAC play with a league ledger of 6-10. BGSU ended conference play in fourth place in the MAC's East Division, and the Falcons tied Western Michigan for the eighth-best record in the league. WMU, however, won the tiebreaker for tournament seeding by virtue of an 86-70 win in the only head-to-head meeting between the schools during the regular season.
BGSU went to WMU, however, and posted a 78-75 victory in the first round of the 2001 Kraft MAC Tournament March 3. That victory broke a three-game overall losing streak and a seven-game slide on the road.
The Falcons led #1 Toledo at the half, but the Rockets rallied in the second stanza for an 81-63 win in the quarterfinal (March 6).
The Falcons went 6-5 at Anderson Arena this year. BGSU was 3-12 on the road and 2-1 in neutral-site contests this season. In MAC play, the Brown and Orange went 5-3 at home and 1-7 on the road.
Individually, junior Francine Miller led the team in scoring, with 14.3 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, earned all-league second-team honors this year, it was announced March 5. She hit double digits in scoring in 18 of her 23 games, including in 11 of the last 12. Miller had a team-high 25 points in the tourney win at WMU.
Senior Angie Farmer was second on the team with 10.9 points per outing. She posted a season-high 22 points in the regular-season final vs. Miami (Feb. 28), hitting six three-pointers.
Senior Afra Smith was third with 7.9 points per game, while sophomore Kim Griech averaged 7.8 points. Smith, however, missed the Toledo game due to an injury suffered late in the WMU contest. Griech had a career-high 19 points, including 16 in the first half, of that UT game.
Freshman Lindsay Austin was fifth on the squad with 6.8 markers per contest. Junior Dana Western (6.8 ppg), redshirt freshman Pam Brown (6.3 ppg) and senior Jackie Adlington (5.2 ppg) also averaged in excess of five points per game.
From long distance, several Falcons posted impressive shooting percentages. Farmer shot .426 from behind the arc, having made 49 of her 115 three-point field-goal attempts. She has a team-high 2.0 treys per game. Western shot .397 (29-of-73) from long distance, while Griech shot .393 (46-of-117) from beyond the arc. Overall, Miller led the team with 116 field goals made (5.0 per game), while Smith had 89. Freshman Kelly Kapferer shot .449 from the floor on the year, having gone 40-of-89. Brown had a .453 percentage (78-of-172), and Smith shot .438 (89-of-203). In limited action, Adlington shot 32-of-70 from the field (.457).

As a team, the Falcons shot .724 from the charity stripe and .364 from three-point land, while averaging 7.25 treys per game in league play.
BGSU VS. MAC TOURNEY FOES: The Falcons have played nine different schools in the MAC Tournament, with Toledo being the most common opponent ... BGSU has met the Rockets seven times, having won four games ... the Falcons have played Central Michigan and Kent (State) five times each, and are 3-2 against both the Chippewas and Golden Flashes ... BG has met Ball State and Western Michigan four times apiece (4-0 vs. BSU and 2-2 vs. WMU), Ohio three times (2-1), Eastern Michigan twice (2-0) and Akron and Miami once each (0-1 vs. Akron, 1-0 vs. Miami).
MILLER ON ALL-MAC SECOND TEAM: BGSU junior Francine Miller has been named to the All-MAC Second Team, the league office announced March 5 ... Miller, despite missing all of six games and parts of several others due to injuries, averaged 14.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals this year ... she was an all-league first-team pick last year ... the All-MAC First Team consisted of Buffalo's Tiffany Bell, Ball State's Tamara Bowie, Toledo's Kahli Carter, Eastern Michigan's Stephanie Smiley and Kent State's Julie Studer ... Western Michigan's Karen Deurloo, Michelle Johnson of Northern Illinois, UB's Mari McClure and KSU's Carrie Nance joined Miller on the second squad.
MORE HONORS FOR MILLER: The Cleveland Plain Dealer conducted a survey of team captains of each MAC women's basketball team, asking various questions about their peers in the league ... junior Francine Miller topped two of the six categories ... she was listed as the "Best Finisher" in the league ... the article stated, "if this player gets free in the open court, get out the camera" ... perhaps more importantly, Miller was the overwhelming winner in the category "The Last Shot" ... the question read, "With the game on the line, who in the MAC can take it and make it?" ... the article stated about Miller, "Because she can get where she wants, when she wants and is a 3-point threat to boot, Miller's peers had no qualms about picking her as tops in the clutch."
FARMER: SO CLOSE...: BGSU senior Angie Farmer just missed leading the nation in free-throw percentage ... Farmer obliterated the school record with a FT pct. of .952, having made 59 of her 62 attempts this season ... however, the NCAA minimum is 2.5 free throws made per game ... Farmer averaged 2.458 free throws made per game ... had she attempted and made one more free throw, Farmer would have met the NCAA minimum, and would have led the nation.
FARMER CLOSE TO NCAA RECORD: In addition to almost leading the nation in free-throw percentage, Angie Farmer came close to setting a new NCAA record in that category ... the current single-season record for free-throw pct. is .950, set by Ginny Doyle of Richmond in 1992 ... Doyle made 96 free throws in 101 attempts that year.
BGSU's NATIONAL LEADERS: The Falcons were one Angie Farmer free throw shy of leading the nation in a category for the third time in two years ... through the years, BGSU has led the nation in the following individual and team categories:
Individual Sara Puthoff, FT Pct., 1997 (89.7)Team Scoring Offense, 1992 (89.0) Assists, 1992 (23.2) Assists, 1993 (21.5) FT Pct., 2000 (77.3) 3-Pt. FG/Game, 2000 (9.25) % % NCAA Record
SMITH MISSES FINAL GAME: The Falcons played without senior Afra Smith for the first time in her two years with the program ... Smith suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the Falcons' tourney first-round win at Western Michigan (78-75, March 3), and missed the Toledo contest ... she had seen action in her first 56 games with the Brown and Orange, starting all but two of those contests.
GOOD TIME TO BREAK THE STREAK: BGSU's win at Western Michigan in the MAC Tournament's first round (March 3) broke an overall three-game losing streak, and a seven-game road losing slide ... the Falcons went 2-12 on the road during the regular season ... BGSU was 1-7 away from home in MAC play, with the only league road win coming at Ohio on Jan. 6.
MILLER MOVING UP SCORING CHARTS: Junior Francine Miller continues to move up the BGSU career scoring chart ... as part of a prolific scoring effort vs. Marshall (Jan. 17), she reached the 1,000-point plateau for her Falcon career ... Miller hit a three-pointer with 5:31 remaining in the second half, to become just the 16th player in school history to reach the millennial mark ... Miller became just the fifth player in BGSU annals to reach 1,000 career points as a junior ... she moved past Megan McGuire (1,062 points) in the win at WMU, and passed Judit Lendvay (1,078) in the UT game ... Miller now has a total of 1,079 career points in 78 games to rank 13th in school history ... Miller has also moved up a spot on the scoring average list ... she now ranks third all-time with a points-per-game average of 13.83.
GRIECH IS GREAT: Sophomore Kim Griech had a game to remember in the Falcons' season-ending loss to Toledo ... Griech scored a career-high 19 points, including 16 in the first half ... in that opening 20 minutes, she made all six of her shot attempts from the field, including four from three-point range ... Griech scored her 19 points in just 21 minutes.
MILLER FOR THREE: Francine Miller was a major reason for the Falcons' success at Western Michigan (March 3) ... Miller scored a team-high 25 points, and made four of her five shots from three-point range ... after a slow start this year, Miller heated up from beyond the arc late in the season ... she went 15-of-24 (.625) from three-point land over the final six games.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Four different Falcons posted a total of five double-doubles in 2000-01 ... redshirt freshman Pam Brown posted her second double-double of the year in the win at WMU, with 11 points and 10 rebounds ... senior Jackie Adlington totalled 14 points and 11 boards in the first Buffalo meeting (Jan. 27) ... junior Francine Miller had 23 points and 11 caroms in BG's win over Charleston Southern (Nov. 24) ... the double-double was her first of the season and the 11th of her career ... in that same game, Brown had the first double-double of her career ... junior Dana Western had her first-ever double-double vs. Arizona (Dec. 8).
THE FARMER IN THE ZONE: On BGSU's "Senior Night," one senior Falcon put forth a stellar effort ... Angie Farmer, the only player in her fourth year with the team, had a game-high 22 points and added five assists vs. Miami (Feb. 28) ... the point total missed her career best by just two, and the assist total was just one off that career standard ... she hit a BGSU season-high six three-pointers, just one away from her own school record ... Farmer ended her career ranked second in school history in career three-pointers made (160), attempted (378) and three-point percentage (.423).
FARMER ON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM: Senior Angie Farmer was named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Team, it was announced Feb. 21 ... Farmer, who maintains a 3.78 cumulative GPA as a secondary education (social studies) major, earned second-team honors for the second consecutive year ... the district team is made up of student-athletes from NCAA Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee ... to be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve on the team, and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher ... team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT: Senior Jackie Adlington hit the first three-pointer of her Falcon career in the second Ohio contest (Feb. 7) ... Adlington became the 11th different Falcon to hit a trey this season ... 10 of those players had drained a "three" by the fifth game of the season ... a total of 10 different players hit a trey last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to that time, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
ADLINGTON ADDS A LOT: Over the final few months, senior Jackie Adlington asserted herself as a force to be reckoned with ... she suited up for the Central Michigan game (Jan. 9), marking her first time in uniform since the season opener ... Adlington had broken her foot in the season opener vs. Youngstown State ... she played just one minute against Central, but averaged 7.6 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds in the next eight games ... after totalling four points and nine rebounds in her first nine games as a Falcon, she amassed 61 points and 66 boards in the next eight games ... Adlington set or tied her BGSU high in either scoring or rebounding in four-straight games ... in the first Buffalo meeting (Jan. 27), she set BG bests with 14 points and 11 rebounds, posting the first double-double of her brief Falcon tenure ... Adlington also had 11 boards at Akron (Feb. 10), and led the Falcons in rebounding in eight consecutive games ... she suffered a foot injury after playing just three minutes at Miami (Feb. 12), and missed the next three games ... she capped her collegiate career with a game-high 11 boards vs. Toledo.
ANDER-RIFFIC! Believe it or not, the Falcons' total of six three-pointers made against Kent State (Feb. 3) is the team's lowest total in a MAC home game in two years ... in eight home conference games last season, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-point field goals per contest ... BGSU shot an eye-popping .461 from three-point range in those games ... this year, the Falcons totalled 68 treys in eight MAC home games ... adding in the MAC Tournament first-round contest vs. Ohio last February, BGSU is averaging 10.0 treys and shooting .435 (170-of-391) over the last 17 home games vs. MAC teams ... the Falcons have made at least six triples in every one of those games.
FALCONS IN NCAA RANKINGS: The Falcons were listed in two categories when the NCAA released the latest national statistics (March 12) ... as a team, BGSU was 13th in the nation in three-point field goals per game, with an average of 6.97 ... BGSU, of course, set a national record in that category last year, making 9.25 treys per game ... the Falcons were 21st nationally with a three-point field-goal percentage of .377 ... individually, senior Angie Farmer was 11th in the nation in three-point field-goal percentage, with a .426 success rate (49-of-115) ... as mentioned earlier, Farmer will fall just shy of meeting the minimum for free-throw percentage ... otherwise, Farmer would have led the nation ... she had a .952 percentage, having made 59 charity tosses in 62 attempts this season ... the national leader, Louisiana Tech's Brook Lassiter, was shooting .909, having made 90 throws in 99 attempts.
THREE BALL, CORNER POCKET: In Mid-American Conference play last season, the Falcons averaged almost 10 three-point field goals made per game, with 159 successful triples in 16 games ... this year, the Brown and Orange sank a season-high 12 in the first Akron meeting, and added 10 at Ohio, nine vs. three teams and eight on four occasions ... BGSU has made a total of 275 successful triples in the last 32 MAC regular-season contests (8.59 per game).
INJURY REPORT: The Falcons have had their share of injuries, and then some, this season ... senior Afra Smith went down late in the WMU game ... she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and missed the Toledo game ... Smith had played in all 56 games since arriving on campus ... another senior, Jackie Adlington, returned to active duty against Miami (Feb. 28) after missing three games ... she had suffered a foot injury after just three minutes of the first Miami game (Feb. 12) ... sophomore guard Megan Jerome was diagnosed with a stress fracture in her back on Feb. 2, and missed the remainder of the season ...the team actually went through the month of January relatively injury-free after playing five December games without three starters - Adlington, fellow senior Angie Farmer and junior Francine Miller ... the Falcons missed a total of 41 player-games due to injury or illness this year ... a total of seven players were sidelined at one point or another.
WHO'S STARTING NOW? Last year, only seven different players started at least one game ... this season, a total of 11 different players made at least one start ... no player started all 29 games, and only freshman Lindsay Austin has started 28 contests ... the Falcons utilized 11 different starting lineups this season, including one stretch in which BG used six different lineups in as many games ... the Brown and Orange used only three different combinations during all of last season, and used the same lineup for the last 19 games of 1999-2000.
FINALLY GOT TO THE LINE...: The Falcons were on the short end of the free-throw statistics for much of the MAC season ... in the first Western Michigan game (Jan. 31), BGSU attempted a total of just two free throws to the Broncos' 31 ... in the WMU rematch, the Broncos again got to the line 31 times, but BG got to the line a total of 28 times ... BGSU actually converted more free throws in that game, sinking 21 to WMU's 20.
...AFTER STRUGGLING TO DO SO: As was the case in the regular-season meeting at WMU, the Falcons struggled to get to the free-throw line during many MAC games this year ... at Akron (Feb. 10), BG had seven FT attempts to UA's 38 ... BG had 23 free-throw attempts, the team's most in MAC play this season, at Miami, but the RedHawks had 30 tries ... over the final nine league games, the Falcons averaged 12.4 free-throw attempts to the opponents' 28.3 ... BG averaged 13.8 charity tosses, to the foes' 27.1, in the 16 MAC contests.
FEWER TREYS = A WIN? The Falcons' win at WMU marked the first time all year that BGSU got a victory despite making fewer three-point field goals than the opponent ... BG sank seven treys to the Broncos' nine ... the Falcons were 1-6 when making fewer triples than the opponent, after going 4-11 in such games last year.
BLOCK PARTY: The Falcons blocked a total of seven shots in the Feb. 7 win over Ohio ... that total was BG's most since a four-overtime game at Ball State two years ago (Jan. 6, 1999) ... the school record for blocks in a game is 11.
BLOCK PARTY II: Freshman Kelly Kapferer had four blocked shots vs. Ohio (Feb. 7), the most of her brief Falcon career ... that total was the most by a Falcon in over five years, since Michelle Terry had four vs. Eastern Michigan on Jan. 17, 1996 ... the school record is six, set on three occasions.
MORE BLOCKING TIDBITS: By the 12th game of the season, the Falcons had surpassed the blocked-shots total for all of last year ... after posting a total of 39 blocks (1.39 per game) last winter, the Falcons blocked 84 shots this season ... BG averaged 2.90 rejections per contest this year ... junior Dana Western entered the season with a career total of eight blocks ... this year, she had a total of 25 rejections to her credit ... three other Falcons -- senior Afra Smith, junior Francine Miller and freshman Kelly Kapferer -- each had double-digit blocking totals ... all but two players on the 14-woman roster had at least one block this year.
85 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the past three years ... in fact, BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 85 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions -- most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
BENCH PROVIDES A LIFT: Not surprisingly, BGSU's injury woes in December translated into greater experience and depth in the subsequent months ... the Falcons got tremendous production from the bench players in a number of conference games ... some of the impressive margins included 41-14 in the win at Ohio (Jan. 6) and 33-13 vs. Toledo (Jan. 13) ... the Falcons held bench advantages of 35-7 and 34-3, respectively, vs. NIU and Buffalo ... in the 16 MAC games, BG got 409 points (25.6 per game) from the bench players to the foes' 343 (21.4 avg.).
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE TREY: The three-point shot has been a staple of Falcon teams over the past few years ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... in 2000-01, the Falcons averaged 6.97 three-pointers made per contest ... Bowling Green made at least five treys in 25 of the 29 games this season.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: In the first 12 seasons after the three-point shot was adopted (1986-87 to 1997-98), Bowling Green teams made a total of 666 three-pointers in 1,890 attempts ... over the last three years, BGSU's totals are nearly 90 percent of the totals during those first 12 years ... during the last three years, Falcon teams have made 596 treys in 1,646 tries.
WRITE THOSE RECORDS IN PENCIL: Entering last season, the school record for three-pointers made in a game was 12 ... BGSU hit double digits in that category no fewer than 12 times last year, including a 16-for-38 performance -- both school records -- in a win over Akron (Jan. 26) ... the Falcons hit double digits three times in 2000-01, including twice in MAC play ... BG made 11 treys vs. Charleston Southern, 12 against Akron and 10 at Ohio ... the Falcons made at least six three-pointers in 13 of the 16 MAC games this year, and had seven at WMU in the league tourney opener.
SMART, VERY SMART: The BGSU women's basketball team has had a great deal of success in the classroom ... as a team, the Falcons have a grade-point average of 3.13 through the fall semester ... eight of the team's 14 players have a cumulative GPA of 3.28 or better, led by sophomore Megan Jerome at a perfect 4.00 through her first three semesters at the University ... senior Angie Farmer has a 3.78 GPA.
SMART, VERY SMART II (OR, "FOUR-POINT GUARDS"): The Falcons' four true freshmen seem to have successfully made the transition to college life ... in addition to receiving regular playing time on the court, all four had a GPA of 3.45 or better during their first semester on campus ... point guards Lindsay Austin and Emily Pohl each had a perfect 4.00 GPA in the fall, while Stefanie Wenzel had a GPA of 3.76 ... Kelly Kapferer had a 3.45 GPA in the fall ... on the hardwood, Austin, Kapferer and Pohl all played in every game this year, while Wenzel saw action in 16 contests.
DOUBLE DIGITS: Jackie Adlington had 14 points in the first Buffalo game (Jan. 27) ... Adlington became the 12th different Falcon player to hit double figures in scoring on at least one occasion this year ... eight different players hit double digits in that category during all of last year.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: Both of the Falcons' point guards were freshmen in 2000-01 ... Lindsay Austin started 28 of the year's 29 contests ... Emily Pohl made her lone collegiate start vs. Buffalo (Jan. 27) ... Austin averaged a team-high 28.7 minutes per game, with Pohl averaging 12.6.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Four 2000-01 Falcon team members are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer finishes her career in second place on the all-time school list for career three-point percentage (.423, 160-of-378), while junior Francine Miller is third (.416, 117-of-281) ... sophomore Kim Griech is sixth on that list (.383, 72-of-188), while junior Dana Western is in ninth place (.361, 53-of-147) ... Farmer is second all-time in three-pointers made, while Miller is in third place ... Griech is eighth and Western ninth on that list ... Farmer is second in three-point attempts, while Miller is now third ... Griech is eighth and Western ninth.
MILLER ON PRESEASON ALL-MAC TEAM: Junior Francine Miller was named to the preseason All-MAC Team in October ... voting for the five-player team was conducted by members of the MAC News Media Association ... last year, Miller became just the second sophomore in school history to earn all-league first-team laurels, joining Jackie Motycka in that exclusive club.
IS THAT A NEW RECORD? Prior to the 1998-99 season, the school records for three-point field goals made and attempted in a season were 97 and 296, respectively ... that '98-99 team made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts, and last year's squad shattered the records yet again, making a MAC-record 259 triples in 710 attempts ... the 2000-01 team made "only" 202 treys in 536 tries.
FARMER FIRES FOR THREE: Last year, as a junior, Angie Farmer shattered the BGSU seasonal records for three-pointers made and attempted ... Farmer sank 78 treys in 186 attempts last winter, and her .419 success rate ranked sixth on that BGSU single-season list ... this year, Farmer made 49 more triples, the fourth-highest total in school history.
