CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sophomore McKenna Houle scattered three hits and classmate Libby Voshell knocked in two runs as the Bowling Green State University softball team posted a 4-0 victory over Penn State in the second game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon (March 23). The game, part of Virginia's Who's Hoo Tournament, was held at The Park.
The Falcons, now 8-8 on the year, got all the scoring Houle would need with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Jenifer Kernahan got a one-out single, but was erased at second base on Jen Domschot's fielder's choice. Junior Renee Rosemeier then delivered a double to left-center to plate Domschot.
For Rosemeier, the double was her second of the day and team-leading sixth of the year. She also leads the club with 11 runs batted in.
The Falcons got three more runs in the third inning, with Kernahan again getting things started. She led off the inning with a single, and took second when Jen Domschot singled. Then, Rosemeier reached on a fielder's choice, and an error by PSU third baseman Jennifer Tripken allowed Kernahan to take third, loading the bases.
The next batter, senior Lynsey Ebel, reached on another Tripken error, with Kernahan scoring on the play. Senior Angie Domschot grounded to the PSU pitcher, who cut down Jen Domschot at the plate for the second out of the inning. But, Voshell singled up the middle to plate both Rosemeier and Ebel. Voshell's season total of nine RBI ranks second on the team behind Rosemeier.
Meanwhile, Houle was holding the Nittany Lions scoreless. PSU had put runners on first and second with one out in the first, but Houle retired the last two batters of that inning, beginning a string of seven consecutive batters set down.
PSU's only other threat came in the fifth inning, when the Nittany Lions got a one-out triple and a two-out walk. But, Houle induced the next batter to ground out to end the inning, and she retired the side in order in both the sixth and the seventh.
With the win, Houle raised her record to 2-4 on the year. The shutout was her first of the year, and she walked two batters while striking out four.
Marisa Hanson took the loss for Penn State, surrendering six hits and just one earned run. She fanned three Falcons and did not walk a batter.
In Friday's other games in the Who's Hoo Tournament, the host University of Virginia swept Liberty University by scores of 9-0 and 2-1.
The Falcons continue action in the double-round-robin tourney with a pair of Saturday (March 24) games vs. UVa. The first contest is scheduled to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
