CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia broke the game wide open with seven runs in the sixth inning, defeating the Bowling Green State University softball team, 12-2. The game, the first of a pair of Saturday (March 24) games between the two teams, was part of the UVa Who's Hoo Tournament at The Park.
Virginia improved to 25-8 with the win, dropping the Falcons to 8-9 in the process.
The Cavaliers scored single runs in each of the first two innings before the Falcons got a run back in the bottom of the second. In that frame, BG began with walks by sophomores Jess Jenkins and Libby Voshell. UVa pitcher Jessica Edwards struck out the next two BG batters, but senior Nikki Rouhana came throw with a two-out single to plate Jenkins. Rouhana had two of BGSU's three hits in the game.
The Wahoos took a 5-1 lead with a three-spot in the fourth inning. Three hits and one Falcon error plated the runs and brought in BG sophomore pitcher McKenna Houle in relief of junior Jessie Milosek. Houle got the final out of that inning.
Virginia broke the game open in the sixth, as five hits and three errors led to seven total runs in that inning. Just one of those runs was earned off Houle.
The Falcons completed the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman Jenifer Kernahan walked, and junior Holly Frantz was inserted to run at first base. Rouhana drew a walk, and, one out later, senior Jen Domschot walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, senior Lynsey Ebel became the fourth Falcon of the inning to draw a base on balls, earning an RBI as Frantz scored.
Edwards got the win for the Cavaliers, throwing a complete-game three-hitter. The Falcons left 13 runners on base as Edwards walked a whopping 11 batters and threw four wild pitches in the game. She struck out eight hitters in moving her record to 6-3.
Milosek took the loss, allowing five runs (just two earned) and eight hits. She walked three batters and fanned three in three-and-two-thirds innings.
Houle surrendered six hits and seven runs, six of which were unearned, in her relief stint.
The teams were scheduled to return to action for a second Saturday clash.
