CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Freshman Jenifer Kernahan had a perfect day at the plate as the Bowling Green State University softball team exploded for a 9-0, six-inning win over Liberty University Sunday (March 25). The game, the final contest for both teams in the weekend's Who's Hoo Tournament, was held at The Park.
The win evens the Falcons' record at 10-10 on the year, while the Lady Flames fall to 9-26 overall.
BGSU put three-spots on the board in the third, fifth and sixth innings to clinch the win. The game was called after six innings due to the eight-run "mercy" rule.
After BG starter McKenna Houle worked out of a jam in the bottom of the second inning, the Falcons went to work offensively. Houle allowed a double and a walk, then was charged with a wild pitch to put LU runners at second and third with one out. But, the Falcon sophomore inducted the next two hitters to hit grounders to shortstop Libby Voshell, ending the threat.
In the third, senior Nikki Rouhana had a one-out single, and Kernahan's second hit of the game was a double to left-center to plate Rouhana. After an out, walks to both junior Renee Rosemeier and senior Angie Domschot loaded the bases for senior Lynsey Ebel. Ebel came through with a two-run double to center, scoring Kernahan and Rosemeier. Angie Domschot was out at the plate on the play, but the damage had been done.
Kernahan got things started in the fifth inning, with a leadoff single. Then, senior Jen Domschot became the first member of her family to triple in that inning, with Kernahan crossing the plate. After a groundout, Angie Domschot's three-bagger enabled her sister to score easily. Ebel followed with her second double of the game to score Angie Domschot.
Angie Domschot's triple was her first of the year and the 17th of her career. She is now tied with Amy Lienhardt (1985-88) for the BGSU career record.
The Falcons added three more runs in the sixth. Junior Holly Frantz led off with a double to right-center, and moved to third on a groundout by pinch-hitter Natalie Phillips. Kernahan followed with her fourth safety of the game, a single that scored Frantz. One out later, Rosemeier singled, and each runner moved up a base on a Lady Flame error.
Freshman Candace Fenton, in a pinch-hitting appearance, reached base on another error as both Kernahan and Rosemeier scored. Kernahan's run was her third of the game.
After relief pitcher Jody Johnson allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth, she struck out the next two batters, both looking, and induced a game-ending fly ball.
Houle recorded the decision for the Falcons. Both BG pitchers threw three innings of scoreless ball, with Houle allowing two hits and Johnson just one. Johnson struck out four batters and did not issue a walk.
LU's Amy Csider took the complete-game loss, her first decision of the year. She allowed all nine BG runs, including seven earned runs, and 12 hits. Csider walked three batters and fanned one.
In addition to Kernahan's four-hit game, Ebel and Frantz each had multi-hit games, with two safeties apiece. Six of the Falcons' 12 hits were of the extra-base variety, with four doubles and two triples.
The host University of Virginia won the Who's Hoo Tournament with a perfect 6-0 record on the weekend. BGSU and Penn State University both went 3-3, while Liberty was 0-6 in the three-day tourney.
The Falcons return to action Tuesday (March 27), opening both the home portion of the schedule and the Mid-American Conference slate. BGSU is scheduled to host the arch-rival University of Toledo in a twinbill, with game one set to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field.
