HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Junior Renee Rosemeier had a career game to lead the Bowling Green State University softball team to a 10-1 win against Marshall University Friday (March 30). The Falcons won the Mid-American Conference game in six innings at Dot Hicks Field.
The Falcons are now 13-10 overall and 3-0 in MAC action, while Marshall drops to 19-14 and 2-3, respectively.
Rosemeier had a grand slam and a career-high seven RBI in the win. The RBI total is believed to be a BGSU single-game record.
The Thundering Herd got on the board first, manufacturing a run with two outs in the opening frame off BG starter McKenna Houle. After Houle retired the first two batters, she allowed a double to Carrie Dean, then hit Vanessa Clarkson with a pitch. Dana Black singled to load the bases, and Houle hit Jenny Ryther with another pitch to score Dean.
Houle would settle down after that first inning, allowing just two hits the rest of the way.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Herd until the third inning, when it was BG's turn for some two-out magic. Junior Holly Frantz had reached base on a one-out single, but MU pitcher Sara Gulla induced the next BG batter to pop up. The next three batters would reach safely, however, with the last of the three -- Rosemeier -- providing the big blow.
Freshman Jenifer Kernahan singled to move Frantz to second, and senior Jen Domschot was hit by a pitch to load the bases and bring Rosemeier to the plate. Rosemeier's line-drive homer to left field erased the BG deficit for good, giving the Brown and Orange a 4-1 lead.
For Rosemeier, the homer was her second of the year and the second of her career as well. The other round-tripper was a grand slam, too, coming in the 2001 season opener against Pacific. Rosemeier now has a team-best 19 RBI this year, after driving in 16 runs during all of last season.
The Brown and Orange tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Kernahan singled, her third hit of the game, and took second when the throw to first was wild. Jen Domschot followed with a triple off the wall in right-center to score Kernahan, and would score on Rosemeier's sharp single to right.
BG completed the scoring with four runs -- all unearned -- in the sixth. With one out, sophomore Crystal Wilson and Frantz had back-to-back singles. Senior Nikki Rouhana followed with another hit to load the bases and bring Kernahan to the plate. Kernahan hit a grounder to the third baseman, who threw high in an attempt to force Wilson at home. Wilson scored safely, and Frantz came around to score as well. Then, Rosemeier completed her career day at the plate.
The junior singled to center, plating both Kernahan and Rouhana and giving the Falcons a nine-run lead. Rosemeier and Kernahan each had three hits on the day.
After freshman Jody Johnson retired the Thundering Herd in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons had a "mercy" win.
Houle got the victory with five innings of four-hit ball. She gave up one run, walked one batter and struck out four, improving her record to 5-4 on the year. Gulla took the loss for Marshall, allowing 12 hits and 10 runs (six earned). Gulla struck out one BG batter and did not issue a walk. She saw her record fall to 11-8.
BGSU outhit the Herd by a 12-4 margin. The Falcons got two-hit games from Wilson and Frantz. After her three-hit game Friday, Kernahan now has nine hits in her last 12 at-bats.
BGSU scored 10 runs in a game for the first time this season. After going the first 19 games of the year without reaching double digits in the hits department, the Falcons have turned the trick in each of the last four games. During that time, BG has outscored opponents by a 35-3 margin.
The Falcons now lead the all-time series with the Herd by an 11-1 margin. BGSU's 3-0 conference start is the team's first since the 1998 season. The Brown and Orange has not begun league play with four wins since 1993.
BGSU and Marshall will return to Dot Hicks Field for a Saturday (March 31) doubleheader, with game one scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
