HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Bowling Green State University softball team started fast and held off a late comeback effort by host Marshall University. The result was a 4-2 Falcon win in the opening game of Saturday's (March 31) Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 14-10 on the season, and start MAC play with a 4-0 record for the first time since 1993. The Thundering Herd saw its record fall to 19-15 and 2-4, respectively.
BG's offense picked up right where it left off in Friday's (March 30) 10-1, six-inning win. Senior Nikki Rouhana opened Saturday's first game with a single off the glove of MU pitcher Sierra Davenport. One out later, classmate Jen Domschot clubbed a first-pitch double to left-center field to score Rouhana. Domschot took third base on a groundout and scored when her sister, senior Angie Domschot, reached on an error. After half an inning, the Falcons led, 2-0.
BG doubled the lead in the fourth, with Jen Domschot again involved. The senior drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored when junior Renee Rosemeier's grounder was misplayed by the Herd shortstop. Then, Angie Domschot singled to send Rosmeier to second. From there, she scored when senior Lynsey Ebel singled down the right-field line.
BG starting hurler Jessie Milosek shut the Herd down through the first five innings, but MU broke through in the sixth inning. Milosek allowed just two hits in those five frames. The hosts got on the board in the sixth, when Nikki Wilcox reached base on an error and scored on Nichole Corrigan's double to right-center.
Freshman Jody Johnson came on in relief of Milosek, and induced the next batter to ground out, with Corrigan taking third. A Carrie Dean bloop single scored Corrigan to cut the lead to 4-2. Then, Vanessa Clarkson hit a liner toward third, and the Falcons' Ebel lunged to make the catch and threw to first to double off Dean and end the inning.
The Herd wasn't finished, however, as Dana Black led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a bloop double. Alison Webb reached base on a BG error, as Black took third, and a groundout sent pinch-runner Danielle Esenwein to second base.
Johnson got the next batter, Jenny Ryther, to strike out for the second out of the inning, but Wilcox drew a walk to load the bases for Corrigan, the team's top hitter. During Corrigan's at-bat, a Johnson pitch sailed over the head of catcher Holly Frantz. Black broke for home, and Frantz took the carom off the backstop and fired to Johnson, who applied the tag in time for the game-ending out.
Milosek earned the win with her five-plus innings of three-hit ball. She allowed both MU runs (one earned) and struck out two batters while not issuing a walk. Milosek moved her record to 5-3 on the year.
Johnson earned her first collegiate save with two innings of two-hit relief work. She walked one batter and fanned one.
MU's Davenport took the loss, scattering eight hits in seven innings. She allowed all four runs, including three unearned tallies. Davenport, who fell to 8-7 on the year, walked two batters and fanned two.
The Falcons outhit the Herd by an 8-5 margin, with Rouhana going 3-for-4 from her leadoff spot. Jen Domschot scored two runs and drove in one.
With the win, the Falcons increased the current winning streak to six games, and BGSU now holds a 12-1 lead in the all-time series with the Thundering Herd.
The teams were scheduled to return to action for the second half of the Saturday doubleheader.
