Dayton, Ohio - Scoring two runs in the ninth inning with two outs, Bowling Green State University topped the University of Dayton 5-4 in UD's opening home game at Stuart Field. Bowling Green wins their third straight game to improve to 3-0 as Dayton falls to 1-7 on the season.
The Falcons started things off early as sophomore Corey Loomis tripled to center field in just the second at bat for the Falcons. He was then batted in by Junior Len Elias, who grounded out to second. Senior Scott Dukate then smashed his first home run of the season with one man on in the second to give the Falcons a 3-0 early advantage.
As sophomore Brett Baumgartner (IP, 1K, 0H) started for BG, pitchers were exchanged after each inning as Dayton slowly chipped away at the Falcons' lead. Dayton went on to score one run in three consecutive innings beginning with the 2nd as Clint Bealsey doubled catcher Mike Wahl in to score. Brooks Vogel and Mark Schulte would also each have an RBI as they both chipped in run-scoring singles in the 3rd and 4th innings respectively.
The Falcons rallied with just one out left in the 9th inning, however, after Junior catcher Tim Newell initiated tie-breaker by lining a single to left field. He was then advanced to second by a bunt from the Senior leadoff/center-fielder Aric Christman. Corey Loomis then netted his third hit of the game (3-straight multi-hit games for Loomis) by scoring in Newell with a single to right. Len Elias then collected his second RBI by scoring Loomis in off of a single to left.
Junior Brad Henry (IP, 2H, 1ER) was brought on in the ninth inning as he was the ninth Falcon pitcher to participate Tuesday afternoon. Dayton tried to make a comeback as Flyer centerfielder Mark Shulte tripled and eventually was driven in by pitcher/DH Mike Kerins, however the Flyers would score no more as they were halted 5-4 and Henry collected his second win of the season to improve to 2-0.
Bowling Green will now prepare to leave for Homestead, Florida, as they will begin a 9-game spring trip beginning Saturday March 10th as they face a team yet to be determined at 2:30pm. Other teams to meet the Falcons in Homestead include Indiana, Rhode Island, Marist, Yale, St. Francis, CW Post, Bradley, and finally Harvard at 10:00am Saturday, March 17, to close out their trip.
