BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team scored early, then held off a late Ohio University charge to earn a 3-2 win Tuesday (April 10). The game, the first half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was held at the BGSU Softball Field.
The Falcons (16-14, 6-3 MAC) took an early lead with a two-run first-inning single. With one out, sophomore Kandice Machain singled off the glove of the third baseman. Machain stole second, then took third on a single by senior Jen Domschot. Domschot then stole second herself, but Ohio starting pitcher Kasey Dowd got a ground-ball out to the right side of the infield, with the runners forced to hold their bases. But, senior Angie Domschot came through.
Angie Domschot singled to score both runners and give the Falcons a lead they would not relinquish. Domschot was one of two Falcons with a pair of hits in the game.
The Falcons added another tally in the third inning. Senior Nikki Rouhana drew a leadoff walk, and took second on a Machain sacrifice bunt. With two outs, junior Renee Rosemeier singled past a diving Ohio second baseman to plate the Falcons' third run of the game. That run would prove to be important.
The Bobcats rallied with a pair of unearned runs off junior McKenna Houle in the sixth. The leadoff hitter, Shannon Pereira, reached base when her infield blooper was dropped for an error. She was erased on Crystal Turner's fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. Then, however, Sara Kraus doubled to left-center to score Turner, and Kraus advanced to third on another Falcon error. BG freshman Jody Johnson replaced Houle, and induced Kelli Bankert to ground out to third baseman Lynsey Ebel. But, Tiffany Bolton singled with two outs to score Kraus and cut the BG lead to a single run.
The Falcons did not score in the bottom of the sixth, despite getting three hits, and the Bobcats got a pair of singles to start the seventh frame. On the second single, by Georgia Villard, pinch-runner Randy Rico tried to advance from first to third. Rico was safe, but Villard was cut down trying to take second base. The potential tying runner was at third with one out.
Johnson, though, got Pereira to hit a grounder back to her for the second out, then induced Turner to ground out to Voshell to end the game.
Houle picked up the win to move to 7-5 on the season. She is now 4-1 with an ERA of 0.97 in MAC games in 2001. Johnson earned her second save of the season, both coming against conference foes.
In her five-and-a-third innings of action, Houle surrendered four hits and two runs, both unearned. She struck out two batters and did not issue a walk. Johnson allowed three hits and a walk in an inning and two-thirds.
Dowd took the loss, allowing four hits and three earned runs in her three-and-two-thirds innings. She walked two batters and fanned one. Reliever Val Wood pitched two-and-a-third innings of no-run, three-hit ball, striking out three Falcons.
Dowd fell to 5-6 on the year.
In addition to Angie Domschot, Rosemeier also had a pair of hits in the game. Hagen had two hits for the Bobcats, as each team had seven hits.
The teams returned to the field for a second game Tuesday.
