WEEKLY NOTES FROM URBAN MEYER
Q: How quickly are players picking up your new offense?
"The whole offense is basically in with some minor changes and adjustments to follow. I feel there is a great battle at quarterback right now. Andy Sahm and Josh Harris with David Azzi right on their tail, is a great battle in my mind. The improvements the quarterbacks have made in the last week have been tremendous."
"We have significant concerns at wide receiver. Just who do we have? We want to run a spread offense, but we just don't have the ability to run the offense with the receivers we have right now. With Alexander and Gerling out, it is a significant concern."
"Mostly, there are a lot of positives on offense. There are way too many missed assignments, not because the schemes are overwhelming, but because of things like concentration, and taking pride in what they are doing. The team is grasping it very well but sometimes we lose focus."
Q: How is the defense looking?
"I think the defense had a very good day yesterday (Wednesday). The first-team defense was playing hard, trying hard. However, I am concerned with the depth. That is an area we have to address."
"I am pleased with the overall effort. It has improved dramatically from the first week till now."
"When you start taking great players out on offense like (Greg) Kupke (sprained knee) and Gerling (torn ACL), that affects you. You don't want to see guys get hurt, but the good news is I anticipate having them both for next fall."
Q: What we can expect to se in upcoming scrimmages?
"There might be some things that we won't show. The offense is the offense, and that's what we are, so we need as many reps as we can. Hopefully there will be great weather, the sun will be out, the grass will be dried up."
"I hope the kids are ready to smack each other around a little bit. I am hoping, counting on my team to come out with a little fire, a little enthusiasm, and play the game the way it is supposed to be played, and I am counting on that. That's gotta happen."
"Next week we are gonna do a lot of situational things, and then again we have a clinic and a scrimmage on Saturday. It's a good opportunity to see the development of our football players."
"The final week we are going to go Tuesday and Thursday and the spring game on Saturday, and that will all be determined at a later date. And that's all gonna be predicated by who we have available and the health of our football team. I think spring games are great, but I know one thing. You can win every spring game you want, but the key is to have that team ready to go next fall."
Q: Is it possible that you can still bring in some players who could have an impact next season?
"Absolutely, we are right in the middle of the second recruiting season, and we had some people decide to quit the football team which freed up some scholarships, and in my mind people can look at in a bunch of different ways. If this happens in my second, third or fourth year I think it is a concern and we need to re-evaluate with what we are doing. If it happens in the first year, I think a lot of guys, there were a lot of changes, and there is a lot more time commitment and things that we are doing that may have not been done here in the past. A few kids have decided to hang it up, so we have some scholarships available, and now a days you can not go into the season( at less than full strength), especially with the emphasis we have on special teams. We need some players. So, to answer your question, we are gonna sign three or four kids here in the next month. We are hoping a couple of junior college guys maybe some guys that can make an impact."
