MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University clinched the outright Mid-American Conference regular-season championship with a 7-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's tennis team Friday (April 20).
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10-12 overall, and BSU finishes with a 5-0 MAC record. The Falcons, who saw a six-match winning streak snapped, fall to 18-9 and 3-2, respectively.
The victory also gives BSU the top seed in the conference tournament next week. The Falcons will be the third seed in the MAC Championships, which will be held Thursday through Saturday (April 26-28) in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The visiting Falcons were attempting to clinch a tie for the MAC's regular-season title for the second consecutive year. BGSU, BSU and Western Michigan all shared the 2000 MAC regular-season crown.
Ball State did not lose a set in singles Friday after winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Two Falcons -- sophomores Geoff Hiscox at the number-one flight and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo at the third level -- took their respective Cardinal opponents to second-set tiebreakers before losing.
The lone Falcon win came at the second doubles flight, where senior Brandon Gabel teamed with Hiscox for an 8-5 win over Chris Varga and Nick Vizzone.
The MAC Championships winner will earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
