BUFFALO, N.Y. - Junior Andrea Genter pitched a three-hitter, and senior Lynsey Ebel drove in four runs as the Bowling Green State University softball team completed a sweep of the University at Buffalo with a 5-1 victory. The game, the second half of a Saturday (April 21) doubleheader, was held at the UB Softball Stadium.
With the win, the Falcons completed a sweep of the three-game weekend series between the teams. BGSU improved to 24-14 on the season, and 12-3 in the Mid-American Conference, good for first place in the East Division. The Falcons have won nine consecutive games.
The Bulls dropped to 8-34 overall and 3-15 in MAC play.
As was the case in Saturday's opening game, the Falcons got on the board quickly, scoring a first-inning run. Senior Nikki Rouhana led off the contest with an eight-pitch at-bat against UB pitcher Heather Robbins. On that eighth pitch, she drilled a double to the base of the centerfield wall.
Rouhana took third base on a wild pitch, and came home on junior Renee Rosemeier's two-out single past a diving UB first baseman.
The Falcons added to that lead in the fourth. Senior Jen Domschot drew a leadoff walk, and took second on Rosemeier's single. After another wild pitch, senior Lynsey Ebel hit a long double down the left-field line to plate both runners.
The Bulls got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, without benefit of a hit. Breanne Nasti reached on an error, took second on a Robbins walk, and went to third when the Falcons attempted a pickoff play on Robbins at first. The Bulls then executed a double steal, with Nasti scoring an unearned run.
The Falcons got a pair of runs in the sixth frame. Rosemeier beat out an infield single for her third hit of the game, and was replaced by pinch-runner Natalie Phillips. Phillips took second on another infield hit, coming off the bat of senior Angie Domschot. Then, Ebel came to the plate, and hit a liner to left.
Ebel's hit, which went to nearly the same spot as her fourth-inning double, eluded a diving UB outfielder and rattled around in the left-field corner. By the time the Bulls got the ball back to the infield, Phillips and Domschot had crossed the plate, and Ebel was at third with her second career triple.
The Bulls did not get a hit off Genter until Nasti's single up the middle with one out in the sixth. Robbins then followed with an infield hit, but Genter got a popup to the infield and a called strike three to end the inning.
For the game, Genter gave up just the one run, which was unearned. She walked three batters and had a career-high nine strikeouts. Genter is now 5-2 on the season.
The Falcons have not allowed an earned run in the last seven MAC contests, and BG pitching has surrendered just eight earned runs in 15 conference games this year. Overall, BGSU has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of the last 20 games.
Robbins took the loss for the Bulls, dropping to 5-15. She allowed nine hits and five runs, all earned, in her complete-game effort. Robbins issued one walk and fanned four batters.
Rosemeier led the way with her three hits, while Ebel and Rouhana had two apiece. Ebel drove in four of the Falcons' five runs in the contest.
The Falcons have completed the road portion of the MAC schedule. BGSU's remaining nine league contests all are scheduled for the friendly confines of the BGSU Softball Field, beginning with a Tuesday (April 24) doubleheader vs. Ball State University. Game one of that twinbill is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
The Brown and Orange will step out of league play for a Wednesday (April 25) doubleheader at Ohio State University, before welcoming Miami University to town for a three-game weekend series.
