COLUMBUS, Ohio - Three unearned runs in the fourth inning lifted Ohio State University to a 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Wednesday (April 25). The game, the first half of a non-league doubleheader, was held at OSU's Buckeye Field.
With the win, the hosts improved to 39-13 on the year, while the Falcons dropped to 25-16.
The Falcons opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Junior Renee Rosemeier and senior Angie Domschot began the inning with back-to-back singles to leftfield off OSU hurler Kristi DeVries. With sophomore Libby Voshell at the plate, Buckeye catcher Stacy Roth threw down to first in a pickoff attempt of Domschot, but the ball skipped away into shallow rightfield, allowing Rosemeier to take third. From there, she scored easily on Voshell's single.
BGSU pitcher Jessie Milosek held the Buckeyes hitless through three innings, but the hosts broke through in the fourth. Chrissy Fowler led off with a bloop single to left, and took second on a single by Roth. Milosek got one out, and the Falcons got a second out when catcher Holly Frantz cut down Fowler at third on the front end of a double-steal attempt. But, the Buckeyes would rally with two outs.
Roth, now at second base, took third on a passed ball. Sarah West drew a walk, and Kristine Himes picked up the hosts' third hit of the inning to plate Roth. Then, with runners at first and third, Milosek got DeVries to hit a fly ball to centerfield. But, senior Jen Domschot was unable to hold on to the ball, and two more runs crossed the plate.
OSU got two more runs in the fifth inning off reliever McKenna Houle. Fowler singled with one out, and Roth followed with a single to center. Fowler dug for third, and the BG throw sailed over the OSU dugout. That allowed Fowler to score and Roth to take third. Roth scored on a fielder's choice by Wendy Allen to make the score 5-1.
The Falcons manufactured a run with two outs in the sixth. Jen Domschot drilled a double to the base of the wall in dead center, and Rosemeier drew a walk. Angie Domschot singled to center to score her twin sister. But, DeVries got a strikeout, one of seven in the game, to end the threat.
DeVries picked up the win with a complete-game five-hitter. She allowed two runs, just one earned, and issued one walk in improving to 14-5 on the year.
Milosek fell to 7-6, despite allowing just one earned run in her four innings of work. The junior surrendered four hits, walked two batters and fanned three.
Houle allowed a pair of unearned runs in her two innings. She gave up two hits, struck out one batter and did not walk anyone.
Angie Domschot was the lone Falcon with a multiple-hit game, going 2-of-3. The Buckeyes outhit the Brown and Orange by a narrow 6-5 margin, with Fowler and Roth collecting two hits apiece. Roth scored a pair of runs.
The teams were scheduled to return to the field for the second half of the doubleheader.
