CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team continued a recent run of success in extra-inning games, defeating host Cleveland State University by a 4-2 count Monday (April 30). The game, which was the first half of a non-conference doubleheader, took eight innings to complete.
With the win, the Falcons improved to 30-16 on the season, while CSU dropped to 15-28. The Brown and Orange reach the 30-win plateau for the second consecutive year and the fifth time in school history.
BGSU has won 30 games in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in BGSU annals.
The win marked the Falcons' 11th consecutive victory in extra-inning games, dating to the final weekend of the 1996 season. BGSU is now 9-0 in such games during the Leigh Ross-Shaw head-coaching tenure.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie through five innings. CSU starter Jessica Miller held the Falcons to just two hits during that time, while BGSU junior Jessie Milosek gave up just two hits in the first three innings. Then, sophomore McKenna Houle replaced Milosek and held the Vikings off the scoreboard in the next two frames.
BGSU broke the tie in the top of the sixth. With two outs, the Falcons put together four consecutive hits to score a pair of runs. First, senior Jen Domschot belted a double to left, and came around to score when junior Renee Rosemeier singled to left.
Then, senior Angie Domschot blooped a single to rightfield, sending Rosemeier to third base. From there, she scored when senior Lynsey Ebel ripped a double to left-center.
The Vikings, however, answered the Falcons with a pair of runs off Houle in the bottom of the frame. Lindsay Gervais led off the inning with a 10-foot single down the first-base line, and Jackie Miller attempted a sacrifice bunt. The BGSU throw to second was late, putting two CSU runners on base with none out.
Then, Stephanie Taylor's sac bunt moved the runners along, and Jessica Miller helped her own cause with a two-run single to right.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until the eighth. Jen Domschot was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Rosemeier faked a bunt and slapped a single off the glove of the charging CSU third baseman, with Domschot taking second.
Angie Domschot beat out a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Ebel grounded to the shortstop, who threw wildly in an attempt to retire Rosemeier at third. Jen Domschot and Rosemeier each scored to give BGSU a two-run lead. Miller struck out the next three batters, but the damage had been done.
Milosek returned to the game and retired the Vikings in the eighth to earn her second save of the year, and her second in three days. In her four scoreless innings, she allowed two hits. Milosek struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Houle got the win with four innings of four-hit ball, improving to 10-6. She allowed two runs, walked one batter and fanned two.
Jessica Miller fell to 7-14 with a complete-game loss. She allowed four runs (three earned) and nine hits in eight innings. Miller struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
BGSU outhit the Vikings, 9-6, with Rosemeier going 3-for-4 and scoring a pair of runs. Angie Domschot had a pair of hits, while Ebel had two RBI in the game.
Jessica Miller had three hits and two RBI in the game.
The teams returned to the field for Monday's second game.
