FALCON FACTS
The Falcons will not practice on Saturday (April 7), but will practice on Sunday (April 8) instead.
Senior wide receiver Kurt Gerling will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will not return for the remainder of spring drills. The severity of his injury will not be known until after the surgery is performed.
Senior wide receiver Aaron Alexander continues to be hampered by the same injury which limited his play in the fall (right knee/separated patella). He is expected to have surgery to repair the problem and is out for the remainder of the spring.
Sophomore linebacker Marlon Anderson and sophomore offensive lineman Anthony Forgione have left the team.
"QUOTING URBAN MEYER"
On what has pleased him after three practices:
"I think the offensive line is making great strides. I think the offense is moving along at a faster pace. I'm pleased with the way they are trying, but we still have forever to go."
"We are only one day into pads. One thing we try to do is make the team understand the difference between a game tempo and a teach tempo and I thought they responded fairly well to picking up the level of play when they competed against each other."
On the competition at several positions
"I think there is good competition at quarterback with Josh Harris and Andy Sahm. David Azzi has had some issues where he hasn't practiced very much because of health reasons (asthma), but we should be fine."
"Receivers are a real concern because Kurt Gerling went down and he was having a good spring. Robert Redd is having a great spring so far and David Bautista is having a really good spring. After that we are really hurting at the wide receiver position. We need some guys to step up. If we are going to run the offense we are talking about doing, I am really concerned with the numbers at receiver."
The first group on our offensive line is trying and responding to our coaching. The second team, the group behind them is doing well so we will have some depth.
"Our tight ends have got to get much better."
(Running backs) "It's hard to say who is ahead of one another. I think those guys are trying. Once again with one day of pads, I want to see some electricity. When you are playing running back you should see some magic when they touch the ball and it's hard to say until you get into a scrimmage situation when guys are trying to tackle you."
(On the defense) "I thought we would be a little further ahead then where we are, especially when you saw how they were working out in the off-season. I was anxious to see what they would look like on the field and if they would just carry over how they worked in the off-season on the defensive side of the field."
On the adjustment to being the head coach:
"I love it (getting to roam and work with all the positions). That's probably the one thing you enjoy about being a head coach. You get to be involved in every aspect of the game. I spend a lot of time with our special teams because that is my background. The same thing on offense. I only coached one year on defense and I get to spend time over there as well. If there is one strength I have, it's getting guys to play hard. That's the number one enjoyment I have right now. I like getting involved in offense, defense, and special teams and just being around the players.
On putting the pads on:
"On the first day wearing pads there should always be a lot of electricity and a lot of excitement."
On weather playing havoc with practice:
"We are actually going to go Friday and Sunday. Today we are going indoors, but I want to stay outside as much as possible. The weather says Friday and Saturday it is supposed to rain so I think we will go inside today and we will move Saturday's practice to Sunday. It's fortunate to be at a place where that is not a major issue so we got that done and everything is ready to go and we should have a great practice on Sunday."
