MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Host Central Michigan University scored in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 3-2 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Saturday (April 7). The game, the first half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was held at the CMU Softball Complex.
The victory moves the Chippewas' record to 18-15 overall and 8-3 in MAC play, while the Falcons drop to 15-13 and 5-2, respectively.
CMU's only lead came on the last play of the game. The teams each scored single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to set the stage for the Chippewa seventh.
BGSU opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, as junior Renee Rosemeier blasted a Wendy Stephens pitch to left for a line-drive homer. For Rosemeier, the homer was her third of the year, and came on a 3-1 count.
The Chippewas tied the game on a two-out error in the bottom of the inning, as Hope Robertshaw scored from third on Michelle Brander's infield grounder.
The Falcons regained the lead in the fifth. Senior Nikki Rouhana reached on a one-out single and took second on a passed ball. With two outs, classmate Jen Domschot singled to bring Rouhana around to score.
The hosts, however, tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Becky Manson, who reached base in all four plate appearances in the game, drew a two-out walk from BG junior Andrea Genter. She scored on Amy Morrison's sharp single to right, just beating Rosemeier's throw and the tag attempt by Falcon catcher Holly Frantz.
CMU's winning run came with two outs as well. Sarah Hamilton singled, and Manson followed with a single to right field. Hamilton tried to reach third as the Falcons attempted to gun her down. The throw from the outfield skipped away, allowing Hamilton to score the winning run.
The Falcons outhit the Chippewas by a 7-6 margin in the game. Rosemeier went 2-for-2 in the contest, while Rouhana had two hits in four at-bats.
Genter was the hard-luck loser, dropping to 3-2 on the season. She allowed six hits and three runs, with just one of the runs an earned tally. Genter walked just one batter and struck out seven in her six-and-two-thirds innings of work.
Jenni Rasmussen got the win for the Chippewas with three-and-a-third innings of relief work. She allowed just one unearned run and two hits. Rasmussen walked one and fanned three in improving to 3-4.
Stephens, the starter, surrendered five hits and one run in three-and-two-thirds innings. She struck out one and did not walk a batter.
The teams were scheduled to return to the diamond for a second Saturday contest.
