MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Ball State University scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to post a 3-2, come-from-behind victory over the Bowling Green State University softball team Friday evening (May 11). The loss eliminates the Falcons from the 2001 Mid-American Conference Tournament.
With the win, Ball State improves to 31-19 on the season, while the Falcons bow out at 35-19.
BSU advances to play Northern Illinois in an elimination game Saturday (May 12), with the winner moving on to the championship round to play top seed and tournament host Central Michigan.
The Falcons and Cardinals battled through three scoreless innings, with BGSU starting pitcher Jessie Milosek working out of a second-inning jam. BSU had loaded the bases with one out on an infield single and two walks, but the Falcon junior struck out BSU's top hitter, Katie Shea, and then fanned Carrie Lively -- both looking -- to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth, the Falcons broke through against Marcy Mobley. Junior Renee Rosemeier hit a hard liner to shortstop, which was misplayed for an inning-opening error. Senior Angie Domschot bunted toward third, and beat the throw for a single as Rosemeier took second. Senior Lynsey Ebel grounded into a fielder's choice, with Rosemeier forced at third. After a strikeout produced the second out of the inning, junior Holly Frantz came to the plate.
Frantz lined a single to leftfield, scoring Domschot. Ebel was tagged out at the plate trying to score from second, but the Falcons had a 1-0 lead.
BGSU scored another run in the sixth, with Rosemeier again reaching base to start the inning. This time, the junior lined a double down the left-field line. Angie Domschot put down another bunt, and BSU third baseman Lively threw wildly in an attempt to cut down Rosemeier at third. The ball sailed into left as Rosemeier came home.
Ball State, however, produced a three-run sixth that the Falcons could not overcome. The Cardinals got a leadoff double by Ruth Hjelmeland which hit at the base of the wall in center. Then, Britni Clark drew a walk, and Janice Campbell's sacrifice bunt put Cardinals at second and third.
Milosek got Abby Willis to hit a short fly ball to left for the second out, but the next four runners would reach base.
Milosek walked Angie Ludwig to load the bases, and Shea singled to left to plate pinch-runner Kris Burdine with the Cardinals' first run. Then, Lively was hit by a pitch, scoring Clark to tie the game.
BG freshman Jody Johnson came on in relief of Milosek, and Kasey Angulo drew a walk to force Ludwig home with the winning run.
Mobley set down the Falcons in order for the win. Mobley allowed five hits and no earned runs in a complete-game effort. She walked one batter and struck out five in improving her record to 22-12 on the season.
Milosek took the loss to fall to 8-7. She allowed three runs and five hits in five-and-two-thirds innings, walking five batters while fanning three. Johnson pitched a third of an inning in relief.
The 2001 Falcons featured four seniors -- first baseman Nikki Rouhana, second baseman Angie Domschot, third baseman Lynsey Ebel and centerfielder Jen Domschot. Angie Domschot was the top hitter in the tournament for the Brown and Orange, hitting .556 (5-for-9) with three doubles and three runs scored.
BGSU's 35 wins ties the 2001 team for the second most in school history. The 1988 team also had 35 victories, two behind the school-record total of the 1992 squad (37-16).
