Muncie, Indiana--The top-seeded Ball State Cardinals tallied an 8-2 win over second-seeded Bowling Green Friday morning in a MAC Tournamnt elimination game suspended by darkness Thursday night and delayed nearly two hours Friday morning. BGSU ends its season with a 36-18 record.
The loss eliminated the Falcons, who lost 20-15 to Central Michigan in a first-round game, from the tournament, while Ball State advances to Game Eight against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
Ball State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on five singles. The Falcons responded with two third-inning runs on a two-run Len Elias homerun. With the game knotted at 2-2, Ball State rallied for two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a commanding 8-2 lead after six innings Thursday.
The game was suspended at that point and scheduled for completion Friday morning at 9 a.m. However, rain delayed the start of the game and the first pitch was not thrown until 10:45. Jason Paul started for the Cardinals and pitched all six innings Thursday, allowing only two runs on seven hits. Andy Anderson started the game Friday and pitched the final three innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out four.
"We couldn't get our offense going at all," Bowling Green head coach Danny Schmitz says. "Paul and Anderson did a nice job of shutting us down. Give Ball State credit for bouncing back after a tough loss."
Eric Bava led the Cardinals offensive attack with a 2-for-5 performance, including his sixth HR of the year and three runs-batted-in. Doug Boone was 2-for-3 with his seventh HR of the season and three RBIs.
Elias was 2-for-4 with the HR and two RBIs, while Corey Loomis was 3-for-4 for the Falcons.
