BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the 2001 volleyball schedule. The Falcons will play 12 home matches at part of a 30-contest regular-season slate.
The Falcons of head coach Denise Van De Walle will open the 2001 campaign at the Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., Aug. 31-Sept. 1. BGSU will meet Tennessee, Maryland and host school Indiana in that tourney.
The following weekend (Sept. 7-8), the Falcons will venture to East Lansing, Mich., for a second-straight tournament hosted by a Big Ten Conference school. Other BG opponents at the Coca-Cola Spartan Invitational, in addition to host Michigan State, include Idaho and Winthrop.
The Falcons will open the home schedule with a non-league match against Dayton. That contest is set for Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Anderson Arena.
That weekend (Sept. 14-15), BG completes the pre-conference slate at the Pioneer Classic in Denver, Colo. In addition to host Denver, the Falcons will meet Siena that weekend.
The following Friday (Sept. 21), the Falcons dive right into the 18-match Mid-American Conference slate, hosting defending league champion Western Michigan.
The Falcons will play home-and-home sets against five of the other six MAC East Division schools, meeting divisional foe Miami just once. BGSU will play two matches against arch-rival Toledo from the West Division, while meeting the other five West schools once each.
Other non-conference foes include Oakland, IPFW and Cleveland State.
The MAC Tournament is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Nov. 20, with quarterfinal matches at campus sites. The highest remaining seed among the four quarterfinal winners with host the semifinal matches (Friday, Nov. 23) and the MAC Tournament Championship (Saturday, Nov. 24).
BGSU went 21-9 overall last season, winning over 20 matches for the second consecutive year and the ninth time in school history. The Brown and Orange posted a 12-6 MAC ledger to tie for the East Division title.
The Falcons lost two seniors from that squad, but BGSU returns a total of 11 letterwinners, including five starters, to the 2001 team.
