Bowling Green - Former Bowling Green State University baseball player Craig Menke signed a free agent contract with the Houston Astros over the weekend. Menke recently completed his four years of eligibility this past spring for Falcon coach Danny Schmitz.
Menke had his best season this past year as a senior, despite missing one full month of action from April 6 through May 6 due to a sprained ligament in his throwing elbow. The Fort Jennings, Ohio, native was 6-1 on the mound with a 3.65 ERA for a BGSU squad that won its third Mid-American Conference East Division title in four years and finished 36-18 overall. In 60 innings of work in 2000, Menke struck out 66 batters, walked just 17, and allowed 28 runs, 23 of those earned. His final outing came in the first round of the MAC Tournament where he struck out three of the six batters he faced before leaving the game in the second inning.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder finished his Falcon career with a 4.72 ERA and an 11-4 record with 128 strikeouts and 67 walks in 139.1 innings of action. He served as a tri-captain on last year's Falcon team and was named second-team All-MAC.
Menke will continue to work on his undergraduate degree in management information systems this fall at BGSU before reporting to spring training for the Astros in 2002.
