BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University cross country teams will host the 15th annual Mel Brodt Invitational on Saturday morning (Sept. 15). The women's race is scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m., with the men's race set for an 11:45 a.m. start. There will be an open race as well, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The race is named for one of the greatest distance running coaches in the country. Mel Brodt's 26-year career included four consecutive top-10 NCAA Championship finishes, the 1969 Mid-American Conference Championship, and runner-up finishes seven other times. During Brodt's coaching tenure at BGSU he coached one Olympic Champion (Dave Wottle), one world record holder, three American event record holders, 28 All-Americans and 46 MAC Champions.
Brodt was inducted into the Ohio Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1984, was the recipient of the Ed Baker Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to track and field in Ohio, and was selected to the Ohio Association of Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1970.
The Falcon men's team has won titles at three previous meets, including last year's race. The BGSU women finished third last year, but the Falcons have won seven titles in the first 14 years of the event.
In addition to the host Falcons, the following schools are scheduled to bring both men's and women's squads (unless noted) to Saturday's meet:
