Gymnastics Team Ranked in National Top 20

Bowling Green, OH - After defeating the University of Missouri last weekend in their first meet of the season, the Bowling Green gymnastics squad has been ranked 17th in the nation according to GymInfo. Several individual efforts have also been recognized in the weekly rankings.
Senior Marny Oestreng is currently ranked 12th in the nation in the vault (9.900), 13th in the all-around (39.275) and 18th in the floor exercise (9.900). Sophomores Kathy Emerson and Pia Sjovall are ranked nationally in two separate events. Emerson is rated 16th in the balance beam with a 9.850 and Sjovall is currently 24th in the vault with a score of 9.825.
BGSU is also ranked in the weekly regional and conference polls. In the Central Region, Bowling Green is ranked 6th with a total team score of a 193.775. This places BG as the top rated school in the MAC after one week of competition.
BGSU Picked Sixth in the MAC
According to the conference coaches, the Bowling Green gymnastics team was picked to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference in 2002. The Falcons were rated behind first place pick and defending MAC Champion Kent State, Central Michigan, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, and Northern Illinois. Ball State and Central Michigan finished in a tied for second in the voting.
BG did receive a vote as the projected MAC Championship winner along with Kent State. Both Central and Ball State received two votes each.
This Week
The Falcons will host their first Mid-American Conference opponent this weekend when Central Michigan comes to BG this Saturuday night. The meet will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Eppler Center Complex on the campus of BGSU. After its win last week over Missouri, BG currently holds a 1-0 record.
The Chippewas look to improve upon their 2001 overall record of 15-11. The Chips finshed second at the MAC Championships and had a conference record of 3-3.
The Series
BGSU trails the series, 11-18. BG was defeated in all three meetings between the two squads in 2001.
Up Next
The Falcons will travel to Muncie, Indiana next Friday, January 25 at 7:00 p.m. to take on the Ball State Cardinals.
