CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University sophomore Stefanie Wenzel (Sussex, Wis./Hartland Arrowhead) has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the conference office has announced. Wenzel, a guard on the Falcon women's basketball team, earns the honor for the first time in her BGSU career.
Wenzel averaged 20.0 points and 6.0 rebounds last week as the Falcons split a pair of home games. She scored a career-high 30 points in Saturday's (Jan. 12) 71-69 win over Buffalo. In that game, Wenzel also set career bests for free throws made (11) and attempted (12), three-point field goals made (5) and minutes played (37).
Wenzel had 10 points and seven rebounds in last Wednesday's (Jan. 9) narrow loss to Northern Illinois, in a then career-most 36 minutes. The Falcons dropped a 56-52 decision to the Huskies.
In last week's two games, Wenzel led the Falcons in scoring, rebounding (tied for team lead), offensive rebounds (total of six), three-pointers (six), three-point pct. (.545, 6-of-11), free throws made (14) and attempted (16) and free-throw pct. (.875).
Through Monday's (Jan. 14) 85-73 win over Akron, Wenzel is second on the team with an average of 10.5 points per game, and is averaging a team-best 14.6 points in MAC play. Wenzel has scored a total of 168 points this year, after scoring 36 points during all of last season. She is averaging 16.4 points per game in this year's eight home contests, including an 18.4 ppg average in the last seven games at Anderson Arena.
In that Akron game, Wenzel paced the Falcons with 20 points, and matched her two-day-old career bests for free throws made and attempted, going 11-of-12 from the stripe for the second consecutive contest.
Wenzel, currently undecided on a major at BGSU, has a 3.90 cumulative grade point average (entering the fall semester).
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award is presented to one male and one female each week. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and have performed well during the past week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons (5-11 overall, 2-3 MAC) will begin a two-game road swing with a Saturday (Jan. 19) game at Ball State. Tipoff for that contest is set for 1:30 p.m. After a Jan. 23 game at Kent State, the Falcons will return home to face Marshall on Saturday, Jan. 26. That game, which will begin at 1:00 p.m., is the first half of a doubleheader at Anderson Arena, as the Falcon men's team will meet Kent State at 3:30 p.m.
