Troy, N.Y. -
Bowling Green got goals from its third and fourth lines and finished its non-conference portion of its schedule with a 2-2 tie at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., on Saturday night.
A third period goal by senior Ryan Wetterberg knotted the game at 2-2 and the Falcons defense held tough for the remainder of the game to secure the tie in front of 2,964 in attendance at Houston Field House.
Freshman Steve Brudzewski put the Falcons ahead first from the right side of the crease when he redirected a pass from sophomore Erik Eaton, scoring glove-side on RPI goalie Nathan Marsters. His second goal of the season at just 2:26 in the first period gave Bowling Green a 1-0 lead. Marc Barlow also assisted on the goal.
The one-goal advantage lasted less than a minute, however. Eaton was called for slashing five seconds later (2:31) and while the Engineers were on the power play Mark Wires was whistled for roughing at 3:03. Center Marc Covosie made the Falcons pay with his 12th goal of the season off of a rebound outside the crease at 3:22 to even the score at 1-1. Matt Murley and Jim Vickers were credited with the assist on the five-on-three power play goal.
RPI's Carson Butterwick scored the home team's second power play goal of the game at 9:02 in the second period, breaking the 1-1 tie. Andrew McPherson and Murley assisted on the play.
Bowling Green struck first in the third period when freshman Taylor Christie picked up a loose puck near the red line, passed to classmate Matthew Lynn, who in turn fed senior Ryan Wetterberg in the right circle. Wetterberg shot past RPI's Marsters to tie the game, 2-2, at 1:42 in the third period. It was his fifth goal of the season and first netter since Nov. 9 when he had two goals against Miami. It marked Christie's first point and assist of his collegiate career while it was Lynn's second.
Just over a minute later, RPI's Marc Covosie took a slapshot from the left circle that appeared to strike Falcon goalie Jordan Sigalet in the head. The freshman was down for several minutes before being taken to the lockeroom. Junior Tyler Masters entered the game at 2:58 for the visibly shaken Sigalet. Sigalet ended the night with 30 saves, including two in the third period, in 42:58 of action.
"He's got a pretty good headache right now," BGSU coach Buddy Powers said about Sigalet after the game. "He was knocked out. He's a good young goalie. They got the five-on-three goal and the power play goal and that was it." According to Powers, Sigalet was hit with an elbow on the play, which forced the freshman to the lockeroom.
The Falcons outshot the Engineers 16-8 in the final 20 minutes of regulation while committing no penalties to send the game into overtime. Both teams had decent, but few, chances in the overtime session with RPI ending with a 4-3 shot advantage.
"There was good action at both ends of the rink," said Powers. "We wanted to win the game, but we got ourselves a tie.
"Balance is important for us and we've got to have that," Powers said about his third and fourth lines scoring. "But, it's not often that Greg Day's line is kept off the board all weekend. Butterwick, Covosie and Murley...that's as good of line as we've gone against."
Masters ended with 10 saves in just over 22 minutes of action while Marsters had 40 saves for the Engineers. "That saved the game for us," Powers said about Masters entering the game late and preserving the tie.
Both teams ended with 42 shots and 40 saves apiece. It was just the second time this season that the Brown and Orange had over 40 shots on goal (51 at Lake Superior, Nov. 24).
The Falcons (6-15-5 overall) return to Central Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend when they travel to Michigan (Jan. 25-26). Faceoffs for both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
