COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss on the road to 24th-ranked Ohio State Wednesday (Jan. 30). The match was held at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
The host Buckeyes improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Falcons dropped to 3-2 in dual-match play.
OSU took the early 1-0 team lead with three wins in doubles play. Adrian Bohane and Paul Warkentin combined at the No. 1 spot to defeat the Falcons' top team of junior Geoff Hiscox and sophomore Joel Carney, 8-1. The Buckeyes also received wins from Jeremy Wurtzman and Conor Casey at No. 2 and Brenton Contini and Phil Metz at No. 3. Wurtzman and Casey defeated seniors Vitek Wild and Mike Kossoff, 8-4, and OSU's No. 3 team downed the duo of senior Ed Kuresman and junior Peter Gardonyi, 8-3.
In singles, Warkentin, playing in the No. 4 position, defeated Kossoff, 6-2, 6-0, and Casey scored a 6-0, 6-1 decision over sophomore Milos Jirout at No. 6. Three nationally-ranked Buckeyes -- Metz (16th), Wurtzman (20th) and Bohane (72nd) -- helped secure the team win with victories at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Metz defeated Hiscox, 6-2, 6-3, while Wurtzman and Bohane defeated junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (6-1, 7-5) and Wild (6-3, 7-5), respectively.
Vince Ng defeated Carney at No. 5, 6-2, 6-4, to give OSU its third shutout in a row.
The Falcons now prepare for three matches on Friday-Saturday (Feb. 1-2) in Kalamazoo, Mich. BGSU will meet Northern Iowa (Friday, 5:00 p.m.) and Illinois State (Saturday, 10:00 a.m.) in neutral-site matches, before taking on Kalamazoo College Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
