KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team split a pair of Saturday (Feb. 2) matches to go 2-1 on the weekend in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Falcons of head coach Jay Harris lost to Illinois State University before rallying to defeat host Kalamazoo College. Both matches finished with 5-2 scores.
With the Saturday split, the Falcons are now 5-3 in dual-match play. BGSU began the weekend with a 7-0 win over Northern Iowa Friday (Feb. 1).
Illinois State opened Saturday morning's match by sweeping all three doubles matches to capture the point. In singles play, junior Geoff Hiscox won at the top flight, and sophomore Joel Carney picked up a victory at the fourth level. The other four matches all went to the Redbirds, however.
BGSU returned to action with an afternoon contest against host KC, and the hosts took two-of-three doubles matches to take the point. The lone Falcon doubles tandem to emerge victorious was the second-flight duo of senior Ed Kuresman and junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo.
In singles play, however, the Falcons got wins at each of the top-five flights. Lopez-Acevedo was a winner at the top flight, and was joined by Carney, seniors Vitek Wild, Kossoff and Kuresman at flights two through five, respectively. Junior Peter Gardonyi lost a narrow match at the sixth flight.
"We knew the Illinois State match was going to be a tough one going in," said Harris. "But, we did not play nearly as well as the night before (vs. Northern Iowa). Illinois State played very well, they came out and battled better than we did.
"The guys were really down after that match, and then we got in a 1-0 deficit early to Kalamazoo after losing the doubles point. It was nice, though, to see the guys come back and win at one through five singles. Mike Kossoff really set the tone with a very quick win at number four, and the rest of the guys played solid throughout. Peter, even though he lost his match, really fought hard. That was a good team win, and it was good to get heading into our two weeks off.'
