Falcons Travel to Lefty McFadden Invitational
Bowling Green begins its 2002-03 regular season under head coach Scott Paluch this Friday, Oct. 4, at the inaugural Lefty McFadden Invitational. The Falcons will face Niagara (5 p.m.) in the first game of not only the tournament, but of all college hockey this season.
BGSU Kicks Off the College Hockey Season...Literally
BGSU will be the first college hockey team this season to lace up their skates when they take on Niagara in Dayton, Ohio (5 p.m.) The Falcons were also the first college team in competition this season with its exhibition game on Tuesday, Oct. 1, against Windsor at the BGSU Ice Arena. The earliest start to the season for the Falcons prior to Tuesday's game against Windsor was an Oct. 3 exhibition win (6-1) over Western Ontario in 1998.
BGSU Versus Niagara University
Bowling Green is 0-1-0 against the Purple Eagles of Niagara in its only meeting on Dec. 30, 2000. The Falcons lost that game 7-2 in Niagara. The Purple Eagles were picked fourth in the College Hockey America preseason polls after a fourth-place finish last season. Niagara was 17-17-1 overall a year ago with an 8-10-1 league record. The top returning scorer for the Purple Eagles is Joe Tallari who tallied 15-14--29 in 2001-02.
Bowling Green Versus Rest of Lefty McFadden Field
The Falcons are 3-2-0 in five previous meetings with Air Force and are 55-21-5 in 81 meetings with fellow CCHA member Miami. The last time the Falcons met the, uh, Falcons was on March 1, 1975. BGSU won that game 7-2. BGSU holds a 22-13 goal advantage in the five meetings. Bowling Green split its series last year with Miami, winning game one, 9-4, and dropping game two, 5-2. BGSU holds a 419-290 goal advantage in the 81 previous meetings. If the two teams match up on Saturday, it would be the first meeting between the two schools on neutral ice.
Falcons Down Windsor In Exhibition Contest
Bowling Green defeated the University of WIndsor on Tuesday night in a tune-up to the regular season, 5-2. BGSU got two power play goals from JR Roger Leonard while captain D'Arcy McConvey, SO Steve Brudzewski and SO Ryan Minnabarriet (PPG) also put the puck in the net. BGSU held a 46-15 shot advantage over the Lancers. The Brown and Orange attempted over 40 shots just twice in 40 games last season. SR Tyler Masters started the game in net for BGSU, stopping nine shots in 29:57 of action. SO Jordan Sigalet allowed the two goals by Windsor and stopped four shots in the third period (30:03). It marked the first exhibition game for the Falcons in two years and was the earliest start to a BGSU season in its 33-year history. The game also marked the first contest for head coach Scott Paluch.
