Bowling Green's Haneline and Buffalo's Calvert Named MAC Scholar Athletes
CLEVELAND, OH - Bowling Green's Chris Haneline (football) and Buffalo's Anna-Lesa Calvert (soccer) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of the Week on October 29, 2002.
Calvert (So., 3.76, psychology, Dallas, Texas) recorded a pair of shutouts over the weekend to ensure the Bulls a spot in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament. Calvert helped UB blank Kent State, 3-0, on Friday, recording a career-best eight saves. She followed that with another 3-0 shutout against Ohio, stopping four shots. Calvert has recorded four shutouts this season.
Haneline (Sr., 3.43, criminal justice, North Olmsted, Ohio) had a team-high 15 tackles, including three tackles for loss, as the Falcons remained undefeated with a 38-20 win over Ball State on Saturday. BGSU is now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the MAC, and the Falcons have moved up four spots to 18 in the latest ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll. BG is now 21st in the Associated Press poll. The No. 18 ranking is the highest in school history. BGSU's 7-0 start is the school's best since the 1985 team won its first 11 games, and the 4-0 MAC start is the Falcons' first since the 1994 team won its first seven MAC contests. On the season, Haneline leads the Falcons with 59 total tackles and 30 unassisted stops. He has six TFLs this year. The Falcons now have a 10-game winning streak, the second-longest active winning streak in the nation.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Female Nominees:
Ball State: Stephanie Keller (volleyball, So., 3.82, secondary education, Muncie, Ind.) played a huge roll in leading the Ball State women's volleyball team to a 2-1 record last week. She solidified the BSU defense by finishing with team-highs in digs all three matches. She posted a match-best 23 digs in four games versus Marshall on Saturday, for a 4.6 digs per game average. Her 28 digs in five games versus Miami on Wednesday tied for a match-high and equates to a 5.6 digs per game average. Keller also tallied 14 digs in three games against Akron on Friday for a 4.667 digs per game average. In total, Keller tallied 65 digs in 12 games for a 5.417 digs per game average. In addition, Keller recorded eight assists on the weekend and one kill.
Bowling Green: Bridget Protas (volleyball, So., 3.72, biology, Holly, Mich.) hit .429 with a team-high five total blocks as the Falcons won their lone match of the week, a three-game victory (30-22, 30-21, 30-21) at Central Michigan on Saturday. Protas had seven kills and just one error in 14 attempts, and also had 13 digs in the victory. On the season, she is hitting .211, and is tied for the team lead with 1.05 blocks per game.
Central Michigan: Michelle Fogle (field hockey, So., 3.82, undecided, Columbus, Ohio) lifted the Chippewas into sole possession of first place in the MAC with her two-goal performance against Miami on October 27. With the Chippewas down 1-0, Fogle got two straight tallies to give the Chippewas the lead for good. The two-goal outing doubled her season efforts, she now has four goals on the season.
Kent State: Helen Jerdan (field hockey, Sr., 3.13, leisure studies, Glasgow, Scotland) scored a goal against No. 5 Michigan State in a 3-1 loss. She recorded an assist in a 5-2 win over Ohio and had two assists in a 4-2 win over Southwest Missouri State. Jerdan leads the team with nine assists and is second with eight goals and 25 points.
Miami: Ashely Swinehart (soccer, So., 4.00, mass communication Worthington, Ohio) scored the opening goal in a 2-1 win over Marshall on Sunday as the RedHawks became the first Mid-American Conference team in league history to earn 11 conference wins. The midfielder also added a goal in a 3-0 win over Wright State on Friday to help Miami eclipse the 15-3-0 mark set in 1999 for the best record in Miami history through 18 games with a 15-2-1 mark.
Ohio: Laura Hageman (volleyball, Jr., 3.37, health and human services, Cleveland, Ohio) set a new career-high with 31 digs to go along with 18 kills and a .415 hitting percentage (18-1-41) in an upset win over East Division-leading and previously unbeaten Akron on Saturday. It was her second 30-dig performance and 12th double-double of the season. In Friday's win against Kent State, she hit .500 (11-0-22) and delivered seven blocks. In leading her team to a 2-1 record for the week, Hageman averaged 4.08 digs, 1.08 blocks and 3.92 kills per game while hitting a composite .412.
Toledo: Melissa Lesage (soccer, Jr., 3.52, exercise science, Trois Rivieres, Quebec) scored two goals in pair of matches last weekend. She netted the game-winning goal in the Rockets' 3-1 win over Northern Illinois on Friday and tallied Toledo's lone goal in a 2-1 loss at Western Michigan on Sunday.
Male Nominees:
Central Michigan: Kyle Croskey (football, Sr., 3.62, industrial education, East Lansing, Mich.) was instrumental in helping the Chippewa offense gain 391 yards versus the MAC's No. 1-ranked defense, Marshall. CMU ran for 208 yards and passed for another 183 yards. The Chippewas fell to the Herd, 23-18.
Kent State: Scott Booker (football, Sr., 3.36, marketing, Pittsburgh, Pa.) recovered a blocked punt in the end zone in Kent State's 16-12 victory at Buffalo. He also had two tackles.
Marshall: Steve Sciullo (football, Sr., 3.05, sport management/marketing, Pittsburgh, Pa.) continued the nation's longest active games started streak for an offensive lineman with his 46th start at Central Michigan. He anchored a line for the nation's No. 1 total offense (148.43 rushing yard per game). Marshall defeated CMU 23-18.
