BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Kellen Kalso scored on a penalty kick in overtime, lifting Michigan State University to a 1-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Friday afternoon (Nov. 1) at a cold and windy Cochrane Field.
The Spartans improve to 11-6-0 on the season, while the host Falcons drop to 4-12-0 on the year.
Perhaps the best scoring chance of the day for BGSU came in the very early going, when freshman Paul Seip hit the post. Seip took a pass on the left side of the goal, and his shot beat MSU goalkeeper Tyler Robinson, but rang off the near post and caromed toward the right side of the field.
The Spartans nearly drew first blood just before the intermission, when a through ball sent Craig Hearn in on BG 'keeper David DeGraff. DeGraff was forced to come off his line, and Hearn poked the ball to his right, but his shot was just wide.
MSU held an overall shots advantage of 21-12, including a 12-4 margin in the first half. The Falcons and Spartans each had seven total shot attempts in the second stanza.
BG's Adrian Akpan came close to breaking the scoreless tie with just over a minute gone in the second half, as his shot was ticketed for the upper right-hand corner of the net. But, Robinson made a diving save to deflect the ball over the bar and keep BG off the scoreboard.
In the overtime period, each team had a shot on goal, with the 'keepers rising to the occasion, before the Falcons were whistled for a trip in the penalty box. Kalso converted on the ensuing PK to give the Spartans the victory. For Kalso, the goal was his second of the year, with both scores coming via penalty kicks.
Robinson made four saves in earning the victory. DeGraff had eight stops for the Brown and Orange.
The Falcons will return to action with a Sunday (Nov. 3) contest at Cochrane Field. BGSU will close the regular season with a 2:00 p.m. "Senior Day" match vs. Cleveland State. Then, the Brown and Orange will prepare for the Mid-American Conference Tournament. BG has earned at least a tie for the conference regular-season title, as well as the number-one seed for the league tournament.
