Falcons Close Out Home Schedule
This week's game with Eastern Michigan will be the sixth and final home game for BGSU during the 2002 season.
With a win, the Falcons will set a school record for most home wins in a season (6) and will notch their first unbeaten and untied season at home since 1992.
The Falcons also are looking to notch their first nine-win season since 1994.
Senior Night
The game against Eastern Michigan will mark the final home game for 15 seniors who will play on the Doyt Perry Stadium turf for the last time. Those who are playing their final home game include LB Marcus Allen, RB Joe Alls, P Pat Fleming, DL Alex Glantzis, LS Joe Gutierrez, LB Chris Haneline, RB Martez Johnson, OL Greg Kupke, RB Godfrey Lewis, OL Jon Mazur, DT D.J. Redd Closes In On Record
With his 11 catches and 128 receiving yards at South Florida, senior Robert Redd continues to position himself statistically as the top receiver in BGSU history. Redd needs just one reception to reach the 200 mark in his career and two catches to break his single season record of 72 set last season.
He also needs 91 receiving yards to become the school's all-time career receiving yards leader surpassing Stan Hunter's career mark of 2,679 set from 1982-85.
Redd leads all MAC receivers with nine TD catches this season.
Haneline Honored
Senior linebacker Chris Haneline has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV University Division Football Team. A native of North Olmsted, Ohio, Haneline holds a 3.43 GPA and leads the team with 87 tackles, including eight for a loss. He captured the Falcons' President's Award in 2001, as the team's top student-athlete, and has twice been named the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week during his career. true colors Since Urban Meyer became head coach he has relied a great deal on a number of true freshman to fill key roles.
2001: DB T. J. Carswell, WR James Hawkins, WR Cole Magner, DB Keon Newson, LB Daniel Sayles.
2002: DB Jelani Jordan, RB P.J. Pope, WR Kenneth Brantley, TE Steve Navarro, DL Matt Leininger, LB Ted Piepkow, LB Jamien Johnson, DL Monty Cooley, DB Terrill Mayberry, DB Tim Arnold, DL Jamal Bryant.
Block That Kick
When sophomore Cornelius McGrady blocked a first-quarter punt at South Florida, it was the seventh blocked kick that BGSU has had this season and sixth block of a punt. BGSU has scored five touchdowns and had one field goal off of blocked punts this season. McGrady and sophomore Keon Newson each have two blocks apiece. On another punt, freshman Mike Crumpler was credited with tackling the punter for a 29-yard loss in the third quarter against USF.
Defense Holding Its Own
As the Falcons look to snap a two-game losing streak, they can take comfort in the fact that their freshman-laden defensive unit has shown improvement. Despite eight new starters this season, BGSU is second in the MAC in scoring defense (24.1), fourth against the rush (149.9) and fifth in overall defense (357.0). In addition, BGSU is second in the league in pass efficiency defense (109.9) and fewest touchdown passes allowed (11). The Falcons have also allowed the third fewest first downs in the league at 196.
In the last two games, BGSU has not allowed a touchdown in the second half of either game. Six times, BGSU's opponents have been stopped in the red zone and have been forced to kick a field goal.
In addition, eight freshmen recorded a tackle for the Falcons (Mitchell Crossley, Mike Crumpler, Matt Leininger, Jelani Jordan, Mike Thaler, Monty Cooley, Jamal Bryant, Terrill Mayberry).
