Rothmund, Culp Earn MVP Honors

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Mario Rothmund and Amber Culp were named the Most Valuable Runners for the 2002 Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country teams, respectively. The honors were announced at the BGSU Cross Country Awards Reception at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Sunday afternoon (Dec. 8).
Rothmund, a senior, was the top finisher in all eight races in which he competed for the Falcon men this fall. Culp, a junior, was the first Falcon woman to cross the finish line in each of the season's final six races.
Head coach Cami Wells also announced several other awards at Sunday's reception. On the men's side, sophomore Kris Lachowski was named the team's Most Improved Runner, while Josh Stucky was named the Most Valuable Freshman. Senior Troy Stiles garnered the captain's award.
For the BGSU women, sophomore Nicole Suitor picked up the Most Improved Runner Award, while Nicola Viljoen was the team's Most Valuable Freshman. Seniors Sarah Lohrbach and Christy Paine earned the captain's awards.
Seniors Katrina Kerns and Kristin Spicer joined Suitor and Viljoen as first-year letterwinners for the BGSU women, while Culp, Lohrbach and sophomore Melissa Krueger each earned their second monogram. Senior Briana Killian and junior Cyndi Bostdorff were third-year letterwinners.
For the Falcon men, junior Steve Blasko was the lone second-year letterwinner, while five team members -- Lachowski, Rothmund, Stiles, Stucky and sophomore Patrick Maynard -- each earned their first letter for the Brown and Orange.
The BGSU men finished in 11th place at the Mid-American Conference Championship, and posted a 28th-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Region Championships. The Falcon women were ninth at the MAC meet and finished 18th at the regional race.
