Tennessee Holds Off Bowling Green, 10-6
February 16, 2002 | Baseball
BGSU entered the ninth inning down 10-1, but posted a furious rally that fell four runs short. Four Vol errors and four walks off of Beau Massey turned into five Falcon runs, all unearned, in the final frame.
Tennessee improved to 3-5, while Bowling Green State fell to 0-2.
Ben Riley (1-0) picked up his first win of the season for UT while Doug Flere (0-1) took the loss. Flere was making his first appearance in nearly two years due to "Tommy John" surgery made him miss all of last season. He walked four and gave up two runs on one hit in three innings of work.
Four other Falcon pitchers combined for 10 walks while giving up eight runs on six hits. Included in that group was Brad Henry, Burke Badenhop, Clayton Booth and Neil Schmitz.
After scoring single runs in the first and third innings on a sacrifice fly and a Falcon error, respectively, the Vols broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning in taking an 8-0 lead.
Tennessee sent 11 men to the plate and took advantage of the Falcons' wildness as they issued five walks in the inning, including four straight and three with the bases loaded. Moffett extended his hitting streak to eight games in the frame with a two-run single to cap the scoring.
Bowling Green State scratched for a run in the seventh when Tim Newell scored on a ground out to make it 8-1 in favor of Tennessee.
The Vols tacked on two more in the bottom of the frame on the second of three wild pitches by Clayton Booth, and one more in the ninth on Moffett's second hit of the day.
Second baseman Corey Loomis led BGSU with two hits (2-for-5) with a double while six different Falcons crossed the plate. Nate Henschen and David Barkholz had RBIs for Bowling Green.
BGSU ends its three-game series with Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET.
