IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team, playing its second road match in as many days, suffered a 6-1 loss to the University of Iowa Sunday (Feb. 17). The match was much closer than the final score would indicate.
With the loss, the Falcons fall to 6-4 in dual matches this season. Three of BGSU's four losses have come on the road against Big Ten Conference schools.
The doubles matches could not have been much closer, with two matches ending in tiebreakers and the third decided by an 8-6 score. BGSU's team of juniors Geoff Hiscox and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo won their match in a tiebreaker at the second flight, while the top-flight duo of senior Vitek Wild and sophomore Milos Jirout lost in a tiebreaker. The Falcons' third-flight team consisted of senior Mike Kossoff and sophomore Joel Carney.
In singles play, three of the matches required a third set, with Hiscox playing a third-set tiebreaker at the top flight for the second-straight day. Hiscox, who won his singles match at Drake Saturday, fell to UI's Stuart Waters Sunday.
Lopez-Acevedo earned the Falcons' lone singles victory, topping Hunter Skogman in three sets at the fourth flight. The other singles competitors for coach Jay Harris were Jirout (flight #2), Wild (#3), Carney (#5) and Kossoff (#6), with Jirout extending his match to a third set.
"It was an extremely close match, despite the 6-1 score," said Harris. "We really got good performances from the team, and we felt like we just wore down a little bit.
"Milos and Vitek had two match points in their doubles match, while Geoff and Nicolas actually saved five match points to win their match. It really came down to those two tiebreakers, and they were going on at the same time. Both (eventual winning) teams saved match points to come back and win.
"In singles, Geoff had the tough task of playing two third-set tiebreakers in two days, and unfortunately, couldn't pull both of them out, going 1-for-2."
The Falcons are now idle until Friday, March 1. BGSU is scheduled to face both Ferris State University and Xavier University on that date.
