FINDLAY, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team won at every singles and doubles flight en route to a 7-0 win over Xavier University Friday (March 1). The dual match was held at the Findlay YMCA.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 7-4 on the year.
BGSU opened the match by sweeping the doubles point. At the top flight, the team of juniors Geoff Hiscox and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo downed XU's Aaron Bauer and Brad Meadors by an 8-3 score. The second-flight duo of senior Mike Kossoff and sophomore Joel Carney won in a tiebreaker, while the team of senior Ed Kuresman and junior Peter Gardonyi was victorious over their Xavier counterparts at the third level.
In singles, all six Falcons won in straight sets, paced by Lopez-Acevedo and Hiscox at the first and second flights, respectively. Hiscox now has a team-best 15 singles wins this season, while Lopez-Acevedo is right behind with 14.
Sophomore Milos Jirout won at the third flight, while Carney was victorious at the fourth level. Kossoff and freshman Ian BLiss rounded out the Falcon singles winners. No BGSU singles competitor lost more than seven games in his match.
"It was a solid performance to open the weekend," said head coach Jay Harris. "Hopefully, we can continue, and build upon, this success for the rest of the weekend.
"This marks the third straight weekend (that BG has played) that we have played really well in the first match. Now, we face Indiana State, ranked number-22 in the country, so we know we will have to play very well."
BGSU's scheduled Saturday (March 2) match vs. Ferris State will not be played, and will be recorded as a 7-0 forfeit win for the Falcons. Harris and his team will play a Saturday match at ISU, beginning at 7:30 p.m. local time.
