COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - A three-run first inning by Bradley University proved to be too much for the Bowling Green State University softball team to overcome, as the Falcons fell to the Braves by a 3-2 count Saturday (Feb. 23). The game, BGSU's first in the Worth/Icebreaker Tournament hosted by Tennessee Tech, was played at the Tech Softball Field.
Bradley picked up the win in the team's season opener, while the Falcons fell to 2-1 on the year.
BU broke on top quickly. Rachel Gensch led off the game with a single, but BGSU sophomore Jody Johnson struck out the next two batters. A single by Brittany Mynsberge, however, was followed by a homer off the bat of Amy Tubbs. That proved to be all the scoring the Braves could muster, but it also proved to be enough for the win.
The Falcons got a run back in the bottom of the inning, as junior Kandice Machain led off with a triple, and came home on a one-out single by Renee Rosemeier.
BGSU got another run in the third inning, as sophomore Candace Fenton led off with a bunt single and took third on Rosemeier's second hit of the day. BU pitcher Sandra Britt came on in relief of Cristin Evans, and got junior Libby Voshell to foul out to left field. The fly ball was deep enough to allow Fenton to tag and score, and the lead was 3-2.
The Falcons could not get the tying run, however. Senior Andrea Genter came on in relief of Johnson and pitched four innings of shutout ball, but Britt was equal to the task. The Bradley reliever surrendered just one hit and did not walk a batter in her five innings of work. She struck out nine, as the two Braves pitchers combined for 13 K's.
BGSU did get a runner as far as second base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not bring the potential tying run any closer to home in either case.
Johnson took the loss for the Falcons in her first decision of the year. She allowed three runs and six hits in three innings of work, walking one batter and striking out five. Genter gave up three hits in her four innings, walking one and fanning seven.
Gensch had three of Bradley's nine hits in the game. For the Falcons, Rosemeier had two of the team's six hits.
The Falcons returned to action later Saturday against Louisville.
