COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Bowling Green State University softball team gave up three runs to the University of Virginia in the fourth inning, which proved to be enough for a 3-2 Cavalier win. The game, the Falcons' third in the Worth/Icebreaker Tournament hosted by Tennessee Tech, was held at the Tech Softball Field Sunday morning (Feb. 24).
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 2-3 on the season. BGSU outhit UVa by a 5-4 count.
BGSU got on the board first, with a run in the top of the second inning. Junior Libby Voshell led off with a double, and scored when classmate Crystal Wilson's sacrifice bunt was misplayed by the UVa first baseman.
The Cavaliers put all the runs they would need on the board in the fourth. A one-out walk was followed by an RBI double. Two Falcon errors later in the inning led to a pair of unearned runs off junior McKenna Houle. The double was the lone UVa hit of the three-run inning.
BG cut the lead in half. Freshman Sara "Sam" Moore had a one-out double, and came home on a two-out single by senior Holly Frantz.
The Falcons mounted a threat in the top of the seventh, as Wilson led off with a double. But, Cavalier reliever Kristin Dennis then struck out the side to end the game.
Dennis, who has two no-hitters to her credit already this season, earned a save in relief of Erin Allinder. Dennis gave up two hits and fanned four batters in an inning and two-thirds of work. Allinder allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) in 5 1/3 innings, striking out three without issuing a walk.
Houle was the hard-luck loser despite tossing a complete-game four-hitter. She allowed just one earned run and walked two batters while fanning four.
Voshell, Wilson, Moore and senior Renee Rosemeier each had one hit for the Falcons. BGSU was scheduled to return to the diamond to face host Tennessee Tech later Sunday afternoon.
