Clarksville, Tenn. - The Bowling Green baseball team flexed its muscles for the first time this season by outhitting host Austin Peay State University, 21-10, and smacking five home runs en route to a 16-7 win at Raymond C. Hand Park on Monday afternoon in Clarksville, Tenn.
Junior Corey Loomis began the hit parade in the second inning with a two-run blast, with Nick Elrod on first base, for a 2-0 Falcon lead.
In the third, David Barkholz walked with one out and stole second base before Tim Newell homered for a 4-0 BGSU lead. After Len Elias flew out to center field, the Falcons played small ball with five consecutive singles to plate three more runs for a 7-0 lead after three innings.
While the Bowling Green offense was producing runs, junior left-hander Doug Flere was keeping the Govs in check by allowing just one hit and not allowing a runner past second base in the first three innings of work. Flere (1-2) lasted two more innings to pick up his first win of the season after five innings of work, allowing just four hits, no runs, one walk and striking out six. It was Flere's first win since May 21, 1999 at Ball State (8-7), who missed all of last year due to Tommy John surgery.
The Falcons kept plating the runs in the sixth with a two-run double by Newell and an RBI-single from Kelly Hunt for a 10-0 lead after five and one-half innings. APSU got into the scoring column, though, in the bottom of the sixth by plating three runs for a 10-3 BG advantage after six innings.
Hunt knocked in Newell in the eighth with a single for another Falcon run while the Govs scored two more runs in the frame off of reliever Ryan Lindquist.
BGSU opened up the scoring in the top of the ninth with five runs, all via the long ball. Nate Henschen led off the inning with a homer and after Neil Schmitz grounded out. Andy Hudak added another solo shot. Then, with Newell and Elias on base, Hunt finished off the barrage with a three-run blast, his team-leading fourth of the season.
APSU added two runs in the bottom of the ninth for the final 16-7 verdict.
Hunt finished 5-for-6 with five RBIs, including two doubles and a home run. Newell ended the day by going 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and four runs scored. Elrod pushed his hitting streak to eight games with a 3-for-4 performance.
BGSU (3-7) continues its spring break road trip on Tuesday, March 12, at Belmont (4 p.m. EST).
