HAMMOND, La. - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team began spring-trip action on a winning note, posting a 6-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana University Tuesday night (March 12). The dual match was held at the Oak Knoll Country Club.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-5 on the season, while Southeastern dropped to 6-8.
Senior Vitek Wild added another BGSU record to his collection in the win. Wild, already the school's career leader in combined wins and doubles victories, picked up his 89th singles win to move into first place on that school list. He passed Ryan Gabel (1995-98) on that list. Wild, who downed the Lions' Eric Subirats in straight sets at the top singles flight Tuesday night, now has a career total of 164 combined wins as a Falcon.
BGSU got wins at five of the singles flights, with only junior Geoff Hiscox suffering a loss. Hiscox actually led at the second flight, 5-3 in the first set vs. Matt Tate, before being forced to retire due to a sprained ankle.
The Falcons' other four singles competitors -- sophomore Milos Jirout (flight #3), junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (#4), sophomore Joel Carney (#5) and senior Mike Kossoff (#6) -- all won in straight sets. None of BG's five singles winners lost more than six games in their two sets.
In doubles play, the Brown and Orange captured two of the three matches to capture the point. Hiscox and Lopez-Acevedo picked up a win at the second flight, while Carney and Kossoff moved to 4-1 on the year with a victory at the third level. Wild and senior Ed Kuresman lost a narrow, 9-8 decision at the top singles flight.
The win marked the debut of BGSU volunteer coach Mike Listopad, who took the reins of the team in the absence of head coach Jay Harris. Harris stayed in Ohio with his wife, Joy, who gave birth to the couple's first child over the weekend (a son, Jackson).
Harris is expected to join the team in time for BGSU's next action, a Wednesday (March 13) match at New Orleans.
