ORLANDO, Fla. - George Mason University pitcher Rene Leveque limited the Bowling Green State University softball team to just five hits, and the Patriots blanked the Falcons by a 2-0 score Saturday (March 16). The game was the Falcons' 10th and final contest at the Rebel Spring Games.
With the loss, BGSU falls to 7-9 on the season. The Brown and Orange went 5-5 on the spring trip.
GMU got the only run it would need in the top of the first inning on a walk, a single and a BG error on a double steal. The unearned run, off Falcon senior Andrea Genter, would hold up as the game winner.
The Patriots got another run in the third inning, on back-to-back singles, another double steal and a sacrifice fly.
The Falcons, who had five hits, did not advance a runner past second base in the game. Senior Renee Rosemeier had two of those five hits for the Brown and Orange.
GMU had seven hits in the game, led by Stacy James with a 3-for-4 performance.
Genter took the loss for the Falcons, giving up two runs (one earned) in five innings of work. She allowed six hits and walked four while striking out four. Sophomore Jody Johnson threw two innings of one-hit shutout relief, walking one and fanning one.
The Falcons are scheduled to open both the home and Mid-American Conference portions of the season with a Thursday (March 21) doubleheader vs. Eastern Michigan University. First pitch of the first game is set for 2:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field. Following that twinbill, the Brown and Orange of head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw will host Marshall University for a three-game weekend series.
