Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University men's basketball coach Dan Dakich honored his outgoing senior class by selecting them as a group to share the 2001-2002 Most Valuable Player honor. The award was announced at the annual BGSU men's basketball banquet, March 21.
Brent Klassen, Len Matela, Keith McLeod and Brandon Pardon were selected for their collective accomplishments in leading the Falcons to their best record since the 1948-49 season with a 24-9 record. During the last four years, each player has played a key role in helping BGSU to a 79-41 record. In addition to receiving MVP honors, each player received the coveted Captain's Award as well.
Another player who will be leaving the Falcon program, one-time walk-on Kris Gerken, was named the recipient of the Earl Rupright Team Spirit Award. Gerken, who will graduate this spring, joined the team two seasons ago and leaves the program as one of the most respected and revered individuals who have been involved with the team during Coach Dakich's tenure.
Sophomore guard Jabari Mattox was named the team's Most Improved Player. Mattox, who played in just nine games a year ago, was a valuable defender and ballhandler who saw his role increase as the season progressed.
