OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Jessie Milosek had another solid pitching performance, and classmate Holly Frantz hit the first homerun of her collegiate career as the Bowling Green State University softball team recorded a 4-1 win over host Miami University Monday afternoon (April 15). The game was the third and final contest of the Mid-American Conference series between the teams at RedHawk Diamond.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 14-20-1 overall and 5-9 in the MAC, while the RedHawks fall to 14-29 and 6-9.
The Falcons broke on top quickly, with a run in the top of the first inning. Senior Natalie Phillips had a one-out bunt single and took second on a wild pitch by MU starter Jackie Poggendorf. Phillips had to hold as Poggendorf got an infield grounder for the second out, but senior Renee Rosemeier doubled to the base of the wall in dead centerfield, with Phillips scoring easily.
The game remained 1-0 until the Falcons broke it open in the sixth. Again, Phillips got things started, with a leadoff single to right. Then, after a long fly ball by junior Libby Voshell produced the first out of the inning, Phillips stole second. Phillips moved to third base on a grounder, and junior Crystal Wilson hit a blooper over the shortstop's head for an RBI single.
On Poggendorf's next pitch, Frantz crushed a ball over the wall in left-center to double the BGSU lead to 4-0.
Milosek allowed just two hits through five innings, but the RedHawks threatened in the sixth. Keri Brisnehan led off with a single through the right side of the infield. With Jessica Zogaib at the plate, Frantz gunned down Brisnehan trying to steal second, with Voshell applying the tag. On the next pitch, Zogaib hit a short popup behind the pitching circle that was caught by diving second baseman Sam Moore. Angie Gerber followed with a single, but Milosek induced Nicki Pelfrey into a check-swing grounder back to the pitcher to end the inning.
The RedHawks finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh, spoiling Milosek's shutout bid. With two outs, Jacque Molinaro singled, and came around to score on a Sarah Buffie double. But, Milosek got Peri Zakin to ground out to second base, and the Falcons had the win.
Milosek allowed six hits in her complete-game effort, and did not issue a walk for the second consecutive game. She struck out two batters, throwing a total of 93 pitches in the contest.
Poggendorf took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings. She fanned one batter and did not issue a walk. Abbey Arnold had one strikeout in a one-two-three seventh.
At the plate, sophomore Jenifer Kernahan went 3-for-3, while Phillips had two hits and scored the first two runs of the game.
The Falcons are scheduled to return to action with a Thursday (April 18) game at Notre Dame.
