CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University's Kandice Machain has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for the sport of softball, the league office announced. Machain earns the honor for the first time in her collegiate career.
Machain, a junior centerfielder, hit .400 in the Falcons' series at Kent State last week. Her four hits included the first three homeruns of her collegiate career, all coming in Saturday's (March 30) doubleheader. After going homerless in her first 237 at-bats at BG, she had the three round-trippers in a seven at-bat span.
Machain, a native of Tucson, Ariz., hit two homers off KSU's Melissa Rhodes in Saturday's opener, and hit her third against Tracie Logar. Records are sketchy, but it is believed that Machain's two-homer game ties the school single-game record. Teammate Libby Voshell had what is believed to be the first two-homer contest in school history last year, going deep twice vs. Illinois on March 12, 2001.
In the KSU series, Machain had a slugging percentage of 1.300. She drove in five of BGSU's six runs on Saturday, scoring three of them. She is hitting .400 in MAC play this season, with a .950 slugging pct. in conference games.
After Monday's (April 1) DH vs. Oakland University, in which Machain went 3-for-6, she is hitting .364 on the season, leading the Falcons in at-bats (77), hits (28 - tied for team lead), triples (three), homers (three), and fielding pct. (1.000). Machain is second on the squad in runs scored (13), RBI (14), slugging pct. (.610) and on-base pct. (.402).
Machain is the third consecutive Falcon to be named East Division Player of the Week by the league office. Junior shortstop Libby Voshell earned the honor two weeks ago, while freshman second baseman Sam Moore was named the P-O-W last week. All three players earned the honor for the first time in their respective collegiate careers.
In addition to Machain's honor, Akron's Lisa Keenan was named the East Division Pitcher of the Week. Toledo's Deanna House and Colette McMasters earned Player- and Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, respectively, for the West Division.
The Falcons (11-12-1 overall, 3-3 MAC) are scheduled to play a Wednesday (April 3) contest at the nationally-ranked University of Michigan, beginning at 3:00. Then, BG is slated to return home for a Thursday (April 4) twinbill against Cleveland State University, with the first pitch at 3:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field.
BG returns to MAC action with a three-game weekend series vs. Central Michigan University. Both Saturday's (April 6) doubleheader and Sunday's (April 7) single game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field.
