Toledo, Ohio - Bowling Green's baseball team swept a doubleheader from the University of Toledo on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Field in downtown Toledo, 3-2 and 11-3. Several thousand fans watched the Falcons take two from rival UT at the new home of the Toledo Mud Hens. Official attendance was 6,823.
The Falcons fought back for a one-run win in game one on Saturday. Nick Elrod hit a one-out double down the left-field line in the sixth inning, then Len Elias reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Andy Hudak followed with a walk to load the bases for designated hitter Spencer Schmitz.
Schmitz hit a grounder to the first baseman who retired Hudak at second base. However, the shortstop's relay back to first base went wide and second baseman Taylor Eckel through to home plate. There were no Rockets at home plate, though, and the ball went to the backstop, scoring Elias and Elrod and giving BGSU a 3-2 lead.
Falcon starter Kyle Knoblauch (3-1) allowed just one hit and no runs over the final two innings to secure the win. Knoblauch scattered five hits, allowed just two runs on two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
UT scored a run in the second and third innings for the 1-0 and 2-1 leads. BGSU scored its other run in the top of the third inning on an RBI-single by Elrod, scoring Loomis who had reached on an error by the UT shortstop. Toledo's Todd Thomas (1-1) picked up the loss, allowing three unearned runs on three walks and no strikeouts.
Kelly Hunt's nine-game hitting streak came to an end as he finished 0-for-2. The BGSU leader in RBIs and home runs was intentionally walked twice, including with two outs and Loomis on second base in the first inning.
The win moved the Falcons to .500 (18-18 overall) and 9-6 in the MAC.
Bowling Green completed the doubleheader sweep over Toledo on Saturday with a 11-3 decision in the nightcap. The Falcons jumped out in front early with five runs in the first two innings to secure the sweep.
David Barkholz led off the game with an infield single and moved to second on a groundout by designated hitter Tim Newell. Barkholz advanced to third on a passed ball by the catcher and scored on a Corey Loomis single to second base. One out later, Loomis stole second base and then scored on a double by Nick Elrod for BGSU's second run of the inning.
In the second frame, Andy Hudak began by being hit by a pitch from Nick Szczur. Kevin Longstreth laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hudak over, but back-to-back walks to Jeff Warnock and Barkholz loaded the bases for Newell. The designated hitter drew the bases-loaded walk to give BGSU the 3-0 lead. Then Loomis singled to centerfield scoring two more Falcon runs for a 5-0 lead after two innings.
Toledo got within striking distance in the fourth inning with two runs, 5-2, but BGSU came right back by scoring in the next four-consecutive innings, including three in the fifth frame.
Loomis led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to right-center field, his eighth of the season and the only one of the day by both teams. Hunt followed with a single, then Elrod doubled to score Hunt for a 7-2 BGSU lead. Another double, this time by Len Elias, put runners on second and third with no outs. However, the only other run for BGSU in the inning came on a wild pitch, scoring Elrod from third base.
Barkholz scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, Elias scored in the seventh on a groundout by Warnock, and Newell scored on a fielder's choice by Hunt in the eighth inning.
BGSU freshman hurler Tyler Saneholtz (4-1) picked up his team-leading fourth win of the year by scattering five hits over seven innings. The right-hander gave up three runs on five walks and four strikeouts. Matt Hundley and Neil Schmitz each pitched a scoreless inning to end the game.
Corey Loomis finished the day 5-for-8 with four RBIs, three runs scored, a double and a home run. He extended his current hitting streak to eight games and raised his batting average to .427.
BGSU (19-18 overall, 10-6 in MAC) hosts Toledo in the series finale at Warren Steller Field on Sunday at 1 p.m.
