Bowling Green, Ohio - The University of Dayton used just one extra-base hit and six stolen bases to defeat Bowling Green on Tuesday afternoon, 8-3, at Warren Steller Field.
The Flyers scored a run in the first and second inning off of Falcon starter Matt Hundley to take the early 2-0 lead.
Bowling Green had a hit in each of the first four innings but never collected the hits in bunches. Nick Elrod singled with two outs in the first and was left stranded while Len Elias led off the second inning with a single only to be thrown out attempting to steal second base. Neil Schmitz and Tim Newell hit back-to-back singles with two outs in the third inning, but Elrod grounded out to end the first Falcon threat.
Meanwhile, Dayton (18-8 overall) plated three more runs in the fifth and seventh innings, to take an 8-0 lead.
BGSU finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning. Spencer Schmitz led off with a walk before Neil Schmitz doubled to right-center, putting two Falcons in scoring position with no outs. Newell came to bat next and cleared the bases with his fourth home run of the season over the right-field wall, cutting UD's lead to 8-3. However, BGSU couldn't maintain the momentum.
Hundley (1-2) suffered his second loss of the year while giving up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits, three walks and one strikeout in six and two-third innings of work. UD pitcher Drew Chesebro (1-1) lasted eight innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, two walks and four strikeouts.
Newell (3-for-5) and Neil Schmitz (2-for-4) accounted for over half of BGSU's hits.
BG returns to the road on Wednesday, April 10, with a 2 p.m. contest at Detroit. The Falcons travel to Buffalo this weekend for a MAC four-game series (April 12-14).
